Do you think this will work?

Hey guys!

So today my boyfriend and I got a little bit side tracked when we went to go buy Avery some more food. We were walking through the pet store, enjoying the toy selection, when we stumbled upon a vast amount of cat trees that were 60-70% off. We got overly excited, because I started chatting up how I'd seen some members use cat posts and cat trees as "perches" or play areas for their bigger birds... and I'm kind of hoping I can do the same, except it will only be for a conure (and - hopefully! - a soon to be Indian Ringneck). It was a steal of a deal considering how marked down it was... I got it for $175 and it was regular $499! I may be crazy for my bird, but I can't imagine being that crazy for my cat! If I had one, that is.

This is the cat tree with Avery on it:

As you can see, she's quite small in comparison, haha! But the plan is to make it bird-friendly by adding plenty of shreddable toys, foraging toys, ladders and rope to climb up and down, as well as natural wood bird perches (hurray for freak snow storms that blow down branches!) to crawl around on and attach more toys to, as well as putting some food bowls up (maybe not water bowls? I can remove the carpet, but it's soft and probably nice to crawl on, and the water would make the carpet gross).

First things first - do you think the rope material used for dulling the cat nails will be safe for Avery? If not, that's fine, I can remove it and replace it with a recommended rope. It's rather bristly (if you have cats and a scratching post you'll understand it's texture), and I did notice Avery chewing on it and not bothered by it.

Secondly - is this a ridiculous and crazy idea? So crazy that... it might just work? Time will tell, I suppose! And all of your advice :D

I have a little cat box type thing (Just like the cylinder on the cat tree, just with the one hole.) And all of my conures have loved it, from GCC to sun. They don't chew on the material much but they love running around inside of it and playing and hanging upside down. It's quite adorable. :) I think your bird(s) will love it. I can't advice on the tough material as mine doesn't have that, but I'm sure someone will pop in who can answer that for ya.

Btw- awesome steal. I'd love to get something like that for mine. :)

That's great to hear! And yeah, when Brendon and I saw the price we didn't even question it, just said yup! Avery should love this!

... you know you're bird crazy when that happens, haha! :)

I think that's a great idea! I considered it myself at one stage but couldn't get one big enough. The ones I've seen, were covered in untreated sisal which is safe for birds. Just check the rope on yours - I suspect it will be the same.

Don't forget to show us the finished version once you've "birdy'd it up"! ;)

I checked, and you're right! It is untreated sisal rope. Lovely :) And that made me burst out laughing, Sterling! I do believe I'll don myself as a bird enthusiast from now on... it will likely please my boyfriend considering I'm a parasitology "enthusiast", too, haha! Thanks for the input. I'll put up the finished project as soon as I'm done!

What a great deal you got!
I am going to have to be on the look out for one on sale here now:)
Can't wait to see your finished stand.
And I too prefer bird enthusiast, though my daughter calls me the crazy bird lady:)

Great idea and great price! Can't wait to see what you do with it! ;)
