Do i bring to a vet??? SEMI emergency!!

so yesterday my dad was cooking and he never tried that food before and the fumes smelt so bad i ran upstairs as fast as i could to check on my conure and budgie. sadly the budgie had passed and i was calming the conure down as she could not walk. she was also regurgitating something
i told my mom to make an appointment ASAP and she waited till the morning. my conure is fine now but im telling her we NEED to go because i read birds hide sicknesses really well.
money isnt a problem, im paying. i need something to tell her. i am so worried even though she is fine

I agree the conure needs to get checked out by an Avian Vet . Sorry for your loss over losing your little Budgie...hopefully your conure will be okay but dont leave it to chance go to the vet ASAP.

okay i got upset and said we really need to take her my mom agreed (which i dont know why she wont, im paying and the 24h vet it no joke 3 mins from our house)
what do we tell the vet? a checkup? is there a certain name that is used for fume poisoning?

Go to vet. Even if he's okay, you'll never know until a vet says so. Even if it's just for peace of mind. If he suddenly gets sick or dies weeks from now, you'll wonder if you should have taken him.

Just explain to the vet what happened and that the budgie died. He or she will know what to check.

Yes, get your conure to the vet as quickly as you can. Tell the vet your bird was exposed to cooking fumes and your budgie passed away after being exposed. Do you know if your father was using a pan with a non stick coating?

Tell vet also about the regurgitation/vomiting and anything about the food/utensils used for cooking. I am so glad you got to your conure in time!

Find out what you can do at home to keep your conure comfortable while she heals.

Sounds like PFE poisoning i.e. Teflon.

I'm so very sorry to hear about the passing of your precious budgie [emoji20] I'm glad you're able to get your conure to an emergency vet ASAP though.

Definitely agree with Mark - it sounds very much so like PTFE or PFOA poisoning. Bird's air sacs are very sensitive. They succumb to airborne poisons/fumes very quickly because of it. Do you or your parents have any non-stick cookware? If so, that's what releases those fumes.

Always try to ensure that any cooking items used above medium heat are PFOA AND PTFE free. If you are not able to do so, try your best to keep your birds far away from where the cooking occurs and keep the area well ventilated but closed off from where the fumes/smoke may come from.

he was cooking on a panini press. he was using a plastic spatula and was cooking like porkchops i think? i dont really pay attention because i dont eat meat.
why he used a panini press i do not know since you cant even cook pork on that. dont know what was going through his mind.
called the vet up. they said either Monday Tuesday Wednesday or Saturday. 77$+ tax for checkup which i heard some vets even throw in a free nail/beak trim with it but not mine. again money doesnt matter though.

If it makes you feel any better, every time I go to the avian vet here it's $100 just for a basic check up.. nail trim? $30!

I'm sorry for your loss. Many panini presses have Teflon, the ceramic ones are hard to find and are costly. Sounds like it's time to get new cookware. I like ceramic, but I don't trust the "new hybrid" pans. I'm not comfortable that they won't cause issues, and some ceramic pans still have Teflon pieces in them, so you gotta check.

Please when this situation has stabilised, move your bird to a better less dangerous location and sit down and talk through the do's and don'ts to your family. It will be evident to them with the demise of your poor budgie what can happen but information is key. So many deaths come about due to people not being aware of the dangers and simply not thinking.

I did that once, on a cat forum. I was panicking - I can't even remember what the situation was but it was nearly midnight and the closest vet was hours away, ours opened at 8am for emergency patients and I couldn't figure out which was the best option for puss, given the travel stress etc.

Anyways, I managed to find a massive American cat forum, and posted a disclaimer at the very beginning of my post. "Whilst I dearly love our family cat, my passion personally lies within the parrots. Our cat is our top priority this minute, and although I need your help, it is most likely I won't be back. Kids/uni/work/try not to spend to much time online....

I got the answers I needed (which was to wait), thanked them and went on my merry way.

It would be nice to have an update by all means, but I give her credit for finding help where she could take it, especially as she is still living at home etc....she's using her head!

If possible, IMHO for what it's worth, I always keep the birds as far from the kitchen as possible. Right now Nigel is several rooms away.

Feel so badly about the budgie. Lovely little birds.
