I am trying to make some natural perches for my timneh but non of the hardware stores near me sell stainless steel hanger bolts... does anyone know where i can get them? all lowes and home depot has is zink plated...
When you do collect natural tree branches, make sure you know what tree your working with. So that you know it's non-toxic for your bird to chew on. I would also peel the bark on the branch. Give it a good hot water rinse and good drying time before using. Also I would collect the branch out in the country side, make sure it's not anywhere near crops cause a lot of them do spray pesticides VIA plane! I used to live out in the country side and I used to make finch nest out of willow trees. My finches used it and had lots and lots of babies in it. I ended up finding my pairs of finches new home cause I ended up with too many...lol I'm not sure where you would find the stainless steel washer and nuts. I kept so many old parts of toys, perches they chewed up and such that I ended up with washers and nuts that I used on new perches.
I just google searched it and here's a site that sells them.
nutsandbolts.com I see lots of sites out there that sells them if you just google search it.
I throw all the branches in the swimming pool and leave it there for a week and then let it dry in the sun. The trees that I used for my iguana was in the pool for a whole month! It was a VERY frustrating time. I do not debark the branches because debarking is Sterretjie's most favourite thing to do during the day.
Craig screwed all the branches in and the screws are on the outside of the outdoor cage where she can not reach them. It is however thick branches. The indoor branches don't have screws, he sawed grooves in each branch at the end and it fits snug between the bars.
Here are a couple of websites that I use all the time for all my kids. Bookmark them, they always come in handy especially when you want to buy house plants.
I go to a construction site where trees are being cut down. That way I can identify the tree and get the branches fresh. Then I soak them in the bathtub with water and GSE drops. I also use zip ties to stabalize them in the cage. Just passing on an idea here to you.
Zip ties wont last with my macaw. He's nosy!!!! That'll be the first place he tear up. Screw on tight is the best method for certain birds. Bleach does kill all the bad stuffs if you want to leave the bark on. As long as you rinse it good and let it air dry for several days, just don't do it near by birds with bleach cause the fumes are toxic!!! I de-bark mine....
I dont debark , thats my parrots favourite pastime , I dont wash the branches either as I collect them on the edge of a state forest , away from any agricultural crops another tip is to put the branches in at an angle , birds rarely find dead straight horizontal branches in the wild , Ive noticed mine prefer to roost where the branch is angled , they kinda lean in to the branch.
I found a place by my house that specializes in fasteners. I got some regular steel hanger bolts(they didnt have stainless but there is no zinc in it) and some stainless wingnuts and washers... I have some dogwood trees in my yard, anyone know if those are safe? i also plan to make a platform for him too. My moms quaker is starting to get arthritis so i want to give him a place to rest his feet.
