I picked up a second hand cage for my new baby grey and I'm trying to find out the best way to disenfect and clean it before I move him in. A 10 part water to 1 part bleach mix has been suggested to me...is this ok or is there a better way?

Bleach can be used for disinfection but please do not do it near your bird because of the fumes. Vinegar is good too but it does no disinfect. Usse 2 tbsp. per quart of water. I also put a few drops of GSE in to make it a germacide. That is grapefruit seed extract. It is a very good product to keep around the house and has many uses.

Thanks for the input...it won't be a problem not using the bleach around him since I won't have him until next week. I'm just trying to make sure we are ready when he gets here. It's bringing back memories of my 3 human children being born and bringing them home! Lol

For safe bird cage disinfecting you use 1 part bleach to 50 parts water.

For those that hate math I make it using 1/2 cup bleach and 25 cups of water.

... and for those who don't want to meassure out 25 cups it's just over 6 litres of water... :p

i know exactly how you feel! i wont be bringing mine home for another month and my husband is making fun of me for "nesting" lol its just like being pregnant! lol Congrats on your baby!

I sometimes use Methylated Spirits for cleaning, or bleach. But my best method is boiling hot soapy water, a scrubing brush & plenty of elbow grease. Then left in the sun for a few days.

I just use hot water and I have a special sponge I got for my fish tank that works REALLY good for cleaning the poop out of the grates. Than I spray with vinegar. I suppose the vinegar isn't really helping but it makes me feel better using it,lol.
