Sun conure , greencheek conure
Hi all, Im a newb to this board.I have a green cheek conure that is 5yrs old and has been with me for 3 years now.She is totally awesome.
Next year on my birthday Im really wanting either a Blue Crown or a Sun conure.I leaning heavily toward the Blue Crown..

Is there any major differences in personality? Is one braver then the other? My greencheek tends to be a bit nervous but it may just be a bird thing.

I want a constant companion, someone who will sit on my shoulder and be with me most the day(I work from home) I also want to be able to take him or her outside wuth a flight suit and take it in the car with me.
So which would be the better option for me? I do like the talking ability of the Blue crown too.Do the Suns talk at all?

I already have the cage, its huge so no problems there. Thanks ahead.

and welcome to the forum:)

Sun Conures are beautiful but they are mega loud ! Yes they do talk.

If you are looking for quieter, then I would go with the Bluecrown:)

welcome! and I have owned many Sun Conures and two Blue Crowns currently my favorite bird is Sugar my Blue Crown! The main difference is noise Suns will make constant noise they never shut up!! Blue Crowns dont make much noise but when they do it is loud mainly though the Blue Crowns just talk. My Blue Crown I own talks so much! so did my other one that was rehomed and I dont have anymore. Suns can talk as well some of my Suns talked some didnt they arent as easy to train to speak as a Blue Crown but they can be taught. Another difference is the Blue Crowns are more cautious birds they would rather sit on you and survey their surroundings whereas a Sun will sit on you but soon jump off and start playing with everything in sight they are such clowns! If you want a loud playful bird that will get into everything and will never cease to amaze get a Sun Conure, If you want a calm mainly quiet cuddle bird then get a Blue Crown. I love both species and both make great pets but they are probably the farthest away from each other when it comes to personality. Good luck choosing!

Thanks so much.Ive really been leaning toward the Blue Crown and from what youve all said I think this is the better choice.I dont mind noise but do like some quiet time.I also prefer a bird that will stick near me and not get into trouble(well much trouble anyway).
Its going to be very hard to wait till next year..:p but I can prepare better that way anyway.

When you say you already have a huge cage do you mean your greencheecks cage? Each bird should have it's own cage for safety reasons. The blue crowned conure is much larger than a greencheek and can easily harm the small tiel sized bird Even if they do seem to appear if to be getting along one bird may just be putting up with it, that can make them more aggressive towards you.

yep do some research on them to pass the time thats what I do :) and like Copperarabian said they do need separate cages.

the cage actually has my sons tiels in it.But he's got another cage(just has to set it up tonight) because one of the tiels has learned that the bars along the edges are farther apart then the rest and he keeps putting his head through.
Its perfect size for a bigger bird though.
My greenie is in a cage next to my chair.I worry how she will react to another bird. She doesnt care about the tiels, mostly because although I help out when he is busy, they are actually his birds and I dont have them out or on my shoulders and such.

You know that you can get a harness for your GCC, I have an Aviator flight suit/harness. I took Ziva out on it last year without problem, and will start again once the weather warms. Other then that good luck with getting a new bird. I love the color of sun conures, but I am drawn more to the blue crown. From what I have read blue crowns are quieter then suns.

My little greenie hates the flight suit I got her.She always goes into breeding mode when I use it too and starts laying eggs or mating with any and everything including my hand..I think it irritates her vent area.So I just gave up last summer.
I wish I could find a way to take her out with me.I could use a little cage but that just seems a bit pointless.I mean she can go out on the front porch and likes it okay. But she is afraid of the sky, even looking out a window kinda freaks her out.

That is what I use, it doesn't touch her vent at all.

Looks like I will have to order one of these.I always thought they were for the bigger birds and would be bulky on such a small bird.
I really really would love to take her out.I think in the long run she would love it too.I hope she isnt too old to start.I mean she is almost five now.
She will let me put it on her probably no problem, she lets me do pretty much anything to her.Im like her god(lol).Of course she hates everyone else too.

BTW I hope no one is thinking Im trying to replace her or anything like that. But now Im wondering if she goes out with me if I should get another bird. But at the same time greenies only live 15yrs and Im going on 50 and if I want a BCC now would be the time.

No worries about being too old, any aged bird can learn. I taught Rosie and she is at least 20.

Teaching a baby bird is sometimes easier. With you and old you take it slow and never for it on your bird.

Well I just ordered the x small aviator.I ordered off Dr fosters and smith. It costed more but I ordered a bunch of bird toys too so it was free shipping.LOL cant not buy toys.
The tiels love the Galactic crunch toy, I bought two and some other toys.Ended up spending 80 dollars so it might have been cheaper to just buy the Harness from Amazon...Hubby will raise eyebrows tonight.

Thanks lovelyloribeth.I have decided that Sun conures may not be the right one for me.But I do see Suns occasionally on CR. Ive never seen a BCC.
