You know, the things you hear about other people doing, like dropping their phone or tablet and cracking the glass, yet you think to yourself "that'll never happen to me. I'm more careful than that." Well it happened.... I dropped my iPad on the concrete in a parking structure and it shattered the glass screen :(. The protective case that I leave on it was getting old and stretched out, but still I thought I was being mindful about not letting it fall out of the case. I kept saying I'll get a new case when I can afford one... uh oh, should have bit the bullet and bought a new case. Now I need a new iPad!

I am using my phone now, but it's sort of hard to use. I rely on the iPad because I don't have a laptop, and I am commuting a lot lately to take care of my mom and because she had to stop driving. The iPad mini is light and portable. It has my day planner in it too. I'm pretty bummed. I'm paranoid to even use it in this room with the birds now, even though I blew it off outside and tape rolled it to pickup any micro pieces of glass.

It's not the worst thing that can happen, but just another thing that shouldn't have happened. Like my bank account getting hacked into and cleaned out last week :(... It's under control now. Still not the worst thing that can happen. In the big scheme of things this stuff is small (don't sweat the small stuff :)) but nonetheless annoying to have to deal with, you know?

Have you dropped your cell phone or tablet and shattered the glass? Did you have insurance on it?

Electronics and I have issues. Let's see:

MrC spilled a glass of iced tea on my laptop. Dead laptop.

Somehow managed to leave my phone in my car and the lock malfunctioned on the only night in years that thieves were wandering the neighborhood (got my phone, a skateboard, and my roadside emergency tool kit worth about $500, along with the contents of the cars of about 7-8 of my neighbors)

Killed more than one phone by dropping them into pools.

Ran over an iPad with the drive tires of a semi (set it on the tires while doing a pre-trip inspection and forgot it was there...not a driver, but always wanted to learn how and a driver friend was teaching me).

Ran over another iPad with a pick up truck. That one actually survived.

Sent a phone through the washing machine.

Reminds me of a couple months ago when my s.o. left his wallet in the car on the only day that he forgot to lock the car door... and thieves tried the handle and it was open. They got the wallet and a couple other things. Makes me wonder how many other times they tried to open it. He also accidentally ran over his phone with a car.

Wow Beatrice, sounds like you've had some pretty bad luck with electronics lol. I no longer think it can't happen to me too..

Julie, So sorry to hear of your run of bad luck and sincerely hope that is done with now?

It can be counted as small but still causes stress which isn't good, hope you sail through the rest of the year no problems but may want to stay in bed a week on Friday LOL?

Ouch! Family just replaced my iPad 3 with the 12in pro. I won't take it off my bed until my new case arrives! My old 3 went to my daughter. It spent its 4plus years in a defender case and if out of the house, an over case! Not a single mark of any kind!

I have been lucky, nothing broken in all the years of electronic slavery.

If you are interested, there's a website called iFixit which is full of teardown videos, repair videos, instructions, sells tools, everything you need to fix your own electronics. Sometimes the cost of the repair is prohibitive - the replacement screen might cost more than a replacement phone on eBay, but sometimes it can be a lifesaver.

I see places springing up all over now that do glass screen replacements, both on-line and in brick and mortar places. One mall I was at recently had 2 of these stores! I'd be so paranoid about getting glass shards and splinters.

Exxxxxcellent!
A form of bad luck I apparently DON'T have!!!!!!!!!
Sorry... didn't mean to gloat.

If DIY for a broken screen, you cover it with tape first.
Base price for ipad screen, aprox $125. This includes labor.
If upgrading, even a broken screened ipad has good trade in value!

Yup. And I passed my luck to my kids. I was just in the Apple Store yesterday with my oldest getting his (thankfully in warranty for two more days) laptop repaired after he dropped it.

I can't help but feel that Apple products are made of thin glass because if you drop one their screens shatter into a ton of pieces. Happened to me when listening to my old ipod years ago, and the screen looks like a huge crack across it. I guess Apple still doesn't make very good drop resistant devices. Meanwhile my samsung galaxy S4 has tolerated quite a bit of abuse in the last few years and it's still kickin', with no damage on the screen.

I've never cracked any of mine including the 3 iPhones I've had. I think I'd have a heart attack if I did.

But my wife has been running around with a cracked galaxy s6 for about a year and my oldest boy has cracked a few android phones.

I found I was eligible for an upgrade, so I got a really great deal on a new iPad Air 2. I will for sure invest in a case asap! The iPads of that model were sold out in all the Verizon stores in my area, so it should be shipped in the next couple days. Then I'll bring it in so they can transfer all my stuff.

Karen, I've known people who still use broken screens, but I'd be so afraid of glass shards. This one is really shattered and more almost microscopic pieces came out today. The birds love the iPad, so I'm not taking a chance with this one.

Also the battery runs down real fast now, and takes forever to charge. The guy said it's because it's too old. I think this accident happened because it wanted to die. It was done lol.

Chiming in late, Julie, but sorry you had to confront the need to replace your iPad. Funny how we depend so dearly on electronic devices, but far better than carrying around endless small change, pads of paper, etc!

Otter Box cases are hideously ugly, but rugged and may be of benefit to your tablet.

As for me, I am cheating death! Neither my iPhone nor iPad have a case. Why? They are beautifully crafted, IMHO aesthetically pleasing, and fate has not yet caught me!

That stresses me out just thinking about it. Of course, I'm also the one that put brand new iPhone 7's into the hands of teenage boys, so I'm not without my own brand of crazy.

Also, I highly recommend OtterBox if you ever do decide to get a case, at least their phone versions. A year ago my oldest son was crossing the street (at a crosswalk, he had the walk signal, and the police took the security footage from the 7-11 at the corner to verify), and a pick up truck ran the light, hitting him pretty much dead on. Thankfully, my kid was fine outside of a few scratches and bruises (he'd actually been skateboarding and had gotten lazy and not taken his helmet off, which turned out to be a very good thing). His phone was in the pocket that made contact with the ground first. The OtterBox case that was on the phone wound up in a half dozen pieces, but the phone inside survived without a scratch.

FYI, add a tempered glass screen protector, $10 Amazon! On my phone, I have the life proof case, but as an FYI, it isn't bird proof! JoJo destroyed it!

This time I'll install a screen protector AND a secure case. Scott, your lack of protection for your devices makes me cringe . As long as you trust your dexterity... I tend to be a little clumsy with my hands and drop things fairly often lol.

I have a no name cheapy version of an Otter case on my phone. It has been great, as I've dropped it on a hard surface a couple times with no phone damage. Even the case still looks good. Except for a small piece of the silicone corner that Robin got a hold of!

Beatrice, I'm glad your son was okay!

Whoa, glad he was OK. Could have been a tragedy. Sure hope the driver was properly disciplined.

Our Foreign Exchange Student couldn't hold-on to anything without dropping it! Brand, new just picked it up, at the store, standing next to the car, drops the new smart phone in a snow pile! Just one of a mile long list of like drops!

Parent-override put into place! No pretty thin /pretty colour cases. Only big whatever color the biggest thickest one came in and had a corner clip ring! Bought a neck lace with a solid cord, connection and linked it all together. She hated it, I loved it (so, did her parents). But with time, and use it won her over! Especially when her friends wanted one! Seems that close at hand wins over pretty, who knew! Reminded me of the pocket protector of old, reinvented!
