I was taken aback when checking out Craigslist today and found an ad offering a female Derbyan Parakeet for sale or rehome. I had to research this little bugger because I had never seen or even heard of one of these parakeets before.

They are gorgeous! I have a friend here who has one and she is a real sweetheart:)

There is a Derbyan at both bird stores by me. They are an IRN relative, but bigger. Heavy chewers, individuals can be noisy and or loud, if tame can hang out with you like an IRN or Alexandrine which is another relative, but like them, don't enjoy body petting... Oh, but gorgeous eye candy though!

I think the ones I know of (who were/are for sale) are adults at the store was because they were very picky who handles them and would only be sweet to certain people, and try to take a chunk out of most of the customers. I will look at and talk to "Derby Girl", but I won't dare try to pick her up. I just love to stand by her and see her beautiful colors.

BACON is right. They are so beautiful, but the noise they do make is LOUD. I would love one. They are so beautiful. There's a place near me that has a resident Derbyan. They say she's ornery, but like all birds, I bet it's how she's treated. I'm sure they are just as lovely as any other babies.

Actually I just really think it's partly their species also. That's one of the reasons I hesitated pursuing getting one. I talked to the breeder of the one in the store (who helps out there), and though she tried to say only good things about Derbyans and downplay the negative, I was thinking hmm, well, maybe the personality isn't quite for me. I guess I'd rather just look at one, which would be a bad reason to get one haha. The standoffish nature of parakeet species. Pionus are standoffish enough for me already LOL. Now if I ever have an aviary I'd love some Asian keets! Noise might be an issue for neighbors though :)

I would have loved to go and see her, but it was way south of me and like a 200 mile drive.

A local store here has a derby as well, and this one his a huge chewer! Which is rather sad, since the store has now replaces the one measly perch in the dinky cage with a PVC pipe and the derby only gets 1 toy at a time. Tail feathers are a mess! I have heard that the derby is quite friendly with one employee and she does know some words and talks, but I still feel sorry for her.

They are truly stunning though, in person! And much larger than I thought they would be!
