I everybody! I haven't updated because I have been very busy with life, and because Darcy doesn't really seem to have any behavioral problems!
For those who don't remember, or who didn't read when I got him: I was mourning Puck's passing, but keeping an eye out for another companion bird. One day, I got a phone call asking if I could foster a bird. It turned out he just landed on somebody's shoulder at a park one day. The person didn't know what to do with him, so they took him to a vet that treats birds, who kept him for a week (and left him alone there over the weekend ). A friend of mine went to the vet for another reason, and offered to take care of it until they found the owner. When my friend got home, her dad said she couldn't keep him, so I got a phonecall, and he was delivered later that night.
He (or she, still haven't tested) is well behaved and healthy. I think he is probably a boy because of how he poofs up and dances when he is happy and/or relaxed and/or sees somebody he finds interesting. He seems to gravitate toward men, especially if they're a little older, so I think his previous owner was an older man.
He's 95% potty trained! I didn't train him, do I don't know how to do it. He almost never poops on shoulders. He usually waits until I take him off (which I try to remember to do periodically).
He was a little bit shy with new people, but after a few trips out in public he warmed up. Now he will step up for most people. With some people he won't step up for, some people he is neutral, and some people he is NUTS about! Sometimes he sees somebody (usually an older man), he'll start displaying, and doing a silly dance. One time at FedEx he RAN down my arm and RAN across the counter and RAN up the guy's arm! He's also done this with a man at the local bird club I joined.
I've been taking him on hikes at a local park, which he seems to really enjoy. I've got him sweater trained, so when I got into someplace that serves food, I can get him to stay inside my sweater until I am done shopping. Sometimes he doesn't even want to come out of my sweater when I leave because he gets all snuggly in there.
He is so funny. He inflates his crop with air like a balloon when he's happy. He isn't very vocal, so he only says "Hi" and "Hello". He does kisses sometimes, and likes to lean into kisses when I kiss him. He's started to imitate our little dog crying, which is hilarious. I have to keep him away from the dogs though, because if they get too close he'll charge them and attack!
Despite not being a big talker, he is smart. I got him a harness, but it doesn't do ANY good because he unfastens it and takes it off in a couple minutes. He can also undo my big ball and chain necklace, and he fastened his Babble Ball (which he LOVES, perhaps because it sounds like him) from its chain. He also laughs at appropriate times in conversations, and when listening to the radio.
Also, this week I was able to clip his wings all by myself. He didn't enjoy it, but he only stayed a little irritated for about a minute, then he seemed to be over it.
Here are a few photos, but there are a bunch on his Facebook page, which you can find by searching for "Darcy Dirigible". Just send a message to say you're from the parrot forums.
I took a hike with him a few days ago. I put him in a sage bush (I make sure all the plants I put him in are safe to chew). He loved crunching up the dead twigs.
He likes the beach.
Every time I take him in or near a closet, he wants to climb inside and hide.
He isn't a fan of water baths, but sun baths are cool.
I put him on the kale plants in the garden.
We were driving around in Hollywood and I thought he needed a picture in front of the House of Blues. I also succeeded in embarrassing my boyfriend by doing this.
I love this one! This is in one of our orange trees.
I have become the crazy parrot lady. I have a lot of parrot decorations now. I have ceramics, wall art, jewellery... I just need some clothes with parrots. If anybody knows where to get some, let me know.
