Curious -- How often do you clean the cage

I visited a friend yesterday, Barbara, who mention she cleans Jessie (her AG 17 years old) 3 times a day. He's cage is small, where he spends most of the day. Jessie is a very happy "set is his ways" bird.

My ex-husband only cleans the cages once a week, an AG and a Cockatiel ????????? they make a huge mess.

Mishka's cage is enormous, like a "castle". I clean it daily, with hot water, wiping the bars down, scrubbing the bottom and her perches. If there is a mess during the day, I clean up immediately.
Once a week, boiling water is used to scrub those hard to get places, where little pieces get stuck.

I wonder how often a bigger cage is cleaned, where many birds are together?

3 times a day though is insane. How does she define cleaning? It takes me half a day to clean Auggie's cage.

If cleaning just means wiping up one small area or doing something to keep it clean then sure 3 times a day is reasonable, but cleaning the whole cage?

We want to keep our birds safe, but most of them are just a generation or two removed from the wild. Who cleans the jungle, and how often?

My kids have actually timed me, cleaning Mishka's cage. Everything is organize, newspaper, water etc, takes me exactly 8 minutes.
Obviously a little longer when scrubbing the bottom thoroughly.

Jungle is too big for me LoL I wonder ?????????

I do a cleaning every wednesday, and an extra heavy-duty cleaning every saturday.

I suppose I do some of that quite regularly. When I think of cage cleaning I'm thinking the full deal: disassemble, soak, scrub, & sanitize EVERYTHING.

Mine is done once a week. They are taken out and I am able to replace branches. They are given a weight check and a general once over.

Deep cleaning is done weekly-ish. Our birds don't spend that much time in their cages - mostly just to sleep in or if Max is sulking.

I try to wipe down Dusty's cage once a day, though I will admit it doesnt always happen...Especially when I am away at school...

I clean up messes daily. I deep clean the entire cage and parts, perches and all on a weekly basis. I put layers of newspaper over the grate now and take the layers off as they soil. I like this because the grate stays clean. Rosie does not get her feet in the messes either. Good question!!

Thanks for a great response. Whatever works for us, as long as our birds are happy and healthy.
My son Steven asked me why I clean her cage everyday...

I tried placing newspapers over the grate, never ever again.
Mishka shredded it, chewed it. Then started throwing it out the cage.

I have placed a doggie bowl, below her food bowl. Most of her poops, land in there. Was worried she would want to eat from it. I sat close by. for hours and hours, watching her. Every time she stepped down, went towards the bowl, I reprimanded her saying uh uh no no. Thank goodness she no longer tries. I do clean that bowl about 5 times a day though. Basically it's the only spot in her cage that must get cleaned daily.

On the subject of cages (kind of)...I have a bit of an issue.

Jade is in a ginormous cage (King cage big enough to fit 3 teenagers/20 yos in - we've tried and were successful). The cage pan that catches all of the poo, pellets and shredded toys is just a few inches off the ground. The cage has a metal "skirting" just above the pan to catch any splatters, I suppose. Above that is a gap of about 4" then is the grate and sides of the cage.

Here's my dilemma...our miniature schnauzer can fit her head through this gap and pulls out the newspaper, because..."some times you get a pellet!" Granted, you have to sift through a lot of poo, but one never knows. Anyway, does anyone have a suggestion to keep her out? I think she'll break through any screening we put there.

Hi there guys, its been a while....I use disinfectant with a spray bottel to clean his gym base, bars, area under the base daily. The only reason I use disinfectant is because he has been sick in the past and its done by habit. I clean up the newspaper under the gym and bottom of cage daily as well and sweep the floor and area around. Any advice on how to get Hugo not so aggro when Im cleaning his area? He has always been territorial about his space and I understand but of late he growls and launches at me - someone must be feeling better - hahaha. The minute I put my hand out to scratch him he is back to normal again, should I just ignore it...guess I could just move him during that time.

I know you clean Hugo's cage weekly, spring clean it often.
How is it going with the ant's LoL (not me hey) have they disappeared yet?

WAHAHAHAHA....ok everyone brace yourselves...I posted a thread about ants and I found a way to get rid of them with vaseline - it really works...the only problem was that I pulled a muscle in my back getting rid of them...I stood on a counter and reached up to smear the vaseline and had to go to physio....Ant, you even commented on that I mustnt injure myself remember....hahaha, well that was the cause....hahahaha...my parrot and I are a fitting pair...hahaha...talk about a rather expensive way of getting rid of ants....6 physio sessions, trip to emergency hospital for pain drip, scans...hahaha. I had no idea that you could tear a muscle connected to your hip by doing that, I always thought the pain was intense immediately, the doctor thought it was my appendix! hahaha....Hugo is happy though, no ants and an area that is squeeky clean - the things we do for our parrots!

I am so happy the worst is over ........ you got rid of the ant's WAWAWAWA BUT you will never get rid of this Ant ME........... haha
