Horus- Cuban
Hi,

We are new parrot owners, we just got Horus, he's a Cuban Amazon Parrot about 7 months old. Are there any Cuban owners out there?

Thanks:green2:

Welcome to Parrot Forums and the Amazon Forum!

Cubans are fairly rare in North America. The Companion Parrot population tends to be along the Gulf States and a bit up the East Coast, with pockets here and there. There is likely a couple members who have Cubans.

Cuban Amazons, (A. leucocephala), Although their region is small, there is a total of 5 subspecies. They represent a large part of the 'Island Amazons:' Cuba, Isle of Pines, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac , Little Cayman, and Bahaman. Determining, which you have is a detailed effort, as they are sadly (In North America) called Cuban as a group.

Please take the time to read the Amazon Forum. The behavior of the Island Amazons, which includes the Cuban Amazons are very near the other members of the family Amazona.

As part of the Amazon Forum, the first Thread is the foundation for understanding basic Amazon Body Language. Sitting with your Amazon and reading it out loud in a pleasant voice will allow you to learn your Amazon's Body Language and your Amazon to become comfortable with you and your family. A single read will not be enough for this information to become locked into your mind. And, also your Amazon becoming comfortable with you!

The Amazon Forum is filled with information that will assure you a long and happy life with your Amazon!

Again, welcome to Parrot Forums and the Amazon Forum!

I do have a Cuban, she's about a year and a half old and we've just had her for a couple months.

I just read up on them a bit. Wow. They're beautiful!

Congrats on your new friend and please share some pics with us! Cuban amazons are rare in the US and I don't believe we have any active users at this time who have one.

I've never seen a cuban before! They're really pretty. Amazons are definitely one of my top parrots (though it's hard to beat a tiny conure)

Welcome, thanks for joining! Would love to see pics of Horus - that is a cool name!

There is a breeder near me (in Michigan). I went to look at a blue front but fell in love with Chicky. He had two younger babies as well but she just caught my attention somehow : )

Hi, we have a Cuban Amazon named Manny who was hatched in 2008. I hand-raised him from a chick. He is very smart, a good talker, and truly gorgeous, but when he hit adolescence he went into "hot amazon" mode and became incredibly aggressive.

Our response was to let him be a day for a few years. He now has a mate, and we are hoping that after a few years of parenthood he will mellow out again and become a pet again. But if he doesn't, that's OK too.

I'd be interested to hear about experiences with female Cubans.

Here is a picture of him with some of his amazon buddies in our outdoor bird porch.

I say 'she' but have not DNA tested. The previous owners said 'he'. I think female only because he felt one of the younger Cubans was a male due to head size/shape and her head resembled the other one.
