Having humidity issues, running two personal humidifiers and one medium to small size humidifier without much luck. Had to ask for a new awesome one for Christmas. I can't wait, been about 30% humidity by the cage. I think Timneh will really appreciate this as she hates taking showers and looks for a good landing zone to jump to when I'm misting. Showers or faucets she doesn't really care where she lands just jumps for "safety". Only uses the water dish to bath and usually only if I run the vacuum. Want to try a waterfall sound machine or something to that affect. I have a nice ceramic dish I bought for her to bath in and thats not really her favorite. Takes about a month to warm up to things I would say. Some smaller toys are accepted much faster though. Loving every minute of being a proud new African Grey Dad!!! Happy Holidays everyone!!:grey:

We use my Grandmother's heavy glass pie dish and place it on top of our Amazon's cage. He cannot get a good hold on it so it stays in place. Water everywhere when he jumps in.

Humidity is really low this year and early! Most people to not know they have a problem. At least you are working to correct it.

We have a full home system that is having serious problems keeping up, mostly due to a mechanical problem. I have told the Service People to come the week between Christmas and New Year, thus getting /keeping people warm for Christmas. Anyway, I have to manually adjust it and its taken near five days to get the house back to 50.

The best tools, is cooking anything that results in steam. We are back to using the old stove top coffee maker, more soups, etc... Once, the core Humidity is lost from a home, recovery is much longer!

Keeping working on it, your Parrot and your dry skin will appreciate it!

I will try my grandmothers pie dish!! My new humidifier is awesome and it's a bit of a filter also which is even more awesome. Already got my humidity up to 38% was 34% in about an hour. Still running my other humidifiers so it's not alone but very excited. Also it's a warmer day today so my humidity was a little higher than it's been. So excited great day!!! Happy holidays everyone!!

Remember to take your readings away from the unit, like the other side of the room or another near by room.

Thank you!! Stuck at 40% but the temp outside is falling fast so I'm pretty happy so far. Its released a gallon of water into the room already. Amazing, did I mention I have two 55 gallon fish tanks in the same room. Talk about dry, in the summer its so humid, funny.

Just some real world real time info for people regarding temps in winter and RH.

Today at 8:30am my indoor temp was 68.75 and RH was 33% and the thermostat was set at 72. I lowered the thermostat to 67.5. A difference of 4.5 degrees. My humidifier was on the low setting over night. When I changed the thermostat I turned the humidifier on high.

Now at 10:21am my indoor temp is 65.0 and RH is 39%

The room where the reading is taken is 230 sq/ft.

Added a second unit today at 1pm. It is a warm air misting humidifier that does not use a filter. Designed for an average sized room. At 2:15pm the indoor temp was 64 (too low for me) and RH was at 43%. I am going to use them both for a day to see how high I can get the humidity. If it hits 50& I'll remove the old filter unit and rely on the new misting unit for Perjo's room.

I keep my house kind of warm I'm at 40% with the temp outside 30 and indoors 74. Now running two personal cool humidifiers by her house, a small humidifier on one side of the room and my new awesome one at the other end. My living room is really big though almost half of my downstairs. its really long. I even have two 55 gallon fish tanks in the room. I feel like its all helped Timneh out in this dry winter time.

What humidifiers do you guys use? I've been trying to find one for my conure's room and haven't found one I like yet.

I have two personal ones that are great actually but no where near big enough. My new one is by honeywell and is a cool moisture humidifier and its capacity is 1.7 gallons suppose to run for 24 hours but I have to fill it twice a day. This unit is pretty awesome but isn't over performing. I also have a cheapo one by premier value that holds 1 gallon. All 4 keep my living room at 40%.

Most of them will specify how many square feet they are designed to accommodate, if you need four for a typical small or medium size room (IIRC 1200-1600 cubic feet) then it sounds like yours are not performing well or you have other issues. Also energy efficiency is key, if you have windows and doors that allow too much draft that will counter act a lot of your efforts. Outside air draft is OK as it adds humidity usually but it's only good till a certain point, eventually too much will force you to raise the temps which will remove humidity.

two of my humidifiers are real small just for fun really put em by Timnehs cage. They work great but only use 2watts. So I figured why not. My cheapo one does kind of suck. My living room is a bit longer and larger than a lot of rooms. pretty much half my downstairs. I have Timnehs house, 2 55 gallon salt water tanks, my christmas tree, a section couch, two lazy boys, a two seater couch, 50 inch tv, Breakfront, and its really not all that packed, and two coffee tables.

It would seem that the 2 - 55 gal salt water fish tanks would be keeping the humidity level fair high. How much water do you have to add to them each day? With those two tanks and the number of small units you are using, it would seem that your problem should moisture build-up (fogging) on your windows and not being overly dry.

Hope your electrical power was not effected by that Northeaster that hit the upper East coast.

Nope here in Burlington Vermont we only got 3 inches I would say. Barely enough to snow blow. I add about 5 gallons of R/O water a week, maybe a little less. No fogging on the windows yet, I would have better luck if I lowered my heat. I keep the house at 74, so its kind of warm. I also have steam heat radiators which I thought would of been better than some heat.

Steam or hot water radiators 'are' the best type of heating source since the air with in the home is not over heated in the forced air furnace, which commonly is the source of pulling humidity from the home. So, heating the home in and of itself is not the source of your humidity loss.

With fish tanks, to my understanding, you can either have a higher home temperature heated by a central furnace or try to heat the home with the tank heaters, right?

Some place you are loosing large amounts of humidity. You may want to think about closing the back door. :D

Glad that you did not get hit with the worst of that storm!

I think your kind of right my back she'd attached to the kitchen is uninsulated and super cold. I have a floor snake blocking the draft but I. Eat this is the source of my loss.

I took Perjo to vet today just for grooming but Dr looked her neck under her feathers due to my concerns of her scratching or a molt. He said if outer feathers look good with no bald spots and they look healthy then what is going on underneath is to be considered normal. I'm talking that as she's just in a longer more subtle molt, which from everyone one I have spoken with in person (bird people) say is the best kind of molt.

IOW, she's not doing herself extra harm with her scratching b/c of the low humidity and molting.

Warmed up here in Ohio today with rain, humidity indoors was 49 all day. She seemed more comfortable as well.

Thats awesome news. I was looking at one of Timnehs feathers that had fallen out. Wow what an effort it must be on their bodies to make these amazing feathers. I read someones post one here about how much effort it is.
