Dusky headed conure
Hey I'm still new to this site and still a fairly new owner of a Dusky Conure named Java. :green2: Java is 4 years old. I just took Java to the vet yesterday morning he was acting lethargic, slightly vomiting and not breathing very well.:( They did an x-ray, contrast study, blood work and they first said he has an obstruction in his crop that they saw in the contrast study but now I am told it is just moving very slowly through his crop. They informed me from the swab they did of his crop that he has an infection due to high amounts of a particular fungus, bacteria and yeast. :( He is on 3 different medications.

He is currently in the ICU in an incubator and getting oxygen. I am soo nervous about him because he is so fragile. I really miss him and it's only been a day. :( I actually just got a call that I can take him home today and keep an eye on him but I have to give him injections...

Has anyone ever experienced this before????

Why do these crop infections happen???

They said it may be from Teflon cookware. I checked my pots and pans and a few have the black non-stick coating that i believe is Teflon but how do I know for sure?????

Maybe he is under too much stress or could it of been his diet?????

Maybe the infection started from a slight obstruction in the crop.
About 2 weeks ago I gave Java some Mango that wasn't ripe enough and it was sorta stringy. When I checked on him after he ate it he was acting lethargic so I picked him up and he started throwing up Mango. I pulled it out of his mouth several times and then he seemed fine. I kept an eye on him all night and by the morning he was basically back to his old self. But it happened all over again Thursday night. :(

Please pray for my little Java :21:...I've been praying for the little guy all day! If anyone has been through this before any advice or information would be wonderful. I really pray he is alright I miss him sooo much already. It's not the same without his joyful sounds to fill up the house

Oh I am so sorry and feeling your stress with you. Our birds are fragile, more so than we want to admit. Please do not blame yourself, that would be no help to little Java's healing process.
You recognized something was not right and took him to the vet.
Sounds like he had good vet care too. I do not have any experience with crop infections but someone else here may.

So sorry about your baby! Crop infections can occur for many reasons. It sounds like you are going to a wonderful vet that did proper testing and is treating him correctly. It could have been the stringy mango, but most birds can digest food items. He may have gotten a hold of something cloth and chewed it up. If it was metal it would have shown up on the xray.
The vet is hopefully treating with both a fungal and antibiotic.
It also could be trichomonas whicH birds can get if exposed to out side, especially doves and pigeons. Prayers for your little guy.

Thanks for your response. The vet hasn't called me to pick him up yet but I know he is holding on strong. I just can't shake off the feeling that it could be something that I have exposed him too.
Do you know if keeping him in a room with my desktop computer on almost everyday, would that affect his health?? from radiation or something??

Thank you so much for your prayers!!
He has been outside but the bloodwork they did came up fine so the trichomonas would of probably shown on that test. He does like to chew the plastic tray at the bottom of his cage and i think he eats it because I never see it collected at the bottom. But the vet said that probably wouldn't affect him.
And yes he is taking an antibiotic and an antifungal so he will hopefully pull through in a few days. Can't wait until he is back to his old self again!!

Well, if he eats the plastic it sure would affect him and definitely cause crop problems. Being in the same room as the computer should not harm him.

Thank you everyone! Java is home now and is doing sooo much better! I'm giving him Spornox orally for the fungal infection and Tazicef as an antibiotic that is given with a needle injection. He is also on Metoclopramide for motility of the crop!
He was so excited to get home!!!
I am soo happy!! :) :)
Thank you for all your prayers!!!

Great news!! I hope he continues to improve.
