Are crock pots safe? I'm not sure if they're sprayed with Teflon or not. I've been looking at a few stainless steel ones but wanted to ask.

Thank you :)

Mine is ceramic, so it's 100% bird safe.

Well, I can tell you from first hand experience because we had this issue come up about a week ago. My daughter forgot to turn the crock pot off, and I got up the next morning, and found out it had been on for about 20 hours straight...

If that thing had a teflon coating, my birds would have been dead!

So, I know for a fact that mine doesn't! The ceramic kind is bird safe...

THANK GOD!

Same here . I don't think I have bought anything with Teflon in YEARS. I know when I got my macaw I double checked. I had one baking sheet that is non stick and trashed it just to be safe

Thank you! I'll have to contact the company maybe to see which ones are teflon-free :)

Have you tried looking at stores such as Peppers, Target, Canadian Tire, or Sears/The Bay? They have such a crazy variety. The Bay and Sears are definitely more expensive (but tomorrow is Black Friday!), but they have a huuuuuuge selection to choose from. I often look there for reference.

I'm more than positive Canadian Tire sells some that are ceramic, too, because they're having a sale on Logostina ceramic frying pans for $35 for both, originally $199 - both PTFE and PFOA free (some ceramic still has PFOA's).

I have a $20 (well, on black friday last year) crock pot from walmart, and it is ceramic with no any teflon coating on it. It's just some glossy paint over the clay. even if it was Teflon there shouldn't be a problem, because Teflon is toxic only when overheated. The crock pots operate on low temperatures (below boiling).

Sounds good, I completely forgot about Canadian Tire! I will check there, and I'll have a look at Wal-Mart again. We have a poor imitation of Black Friday here (the sales are not even close to what you'll have in the US) but still better than paying full price :)

Many thanks

Oh wow, I never thought about my crock pot being Teflon....you opened my eyes to run over to the cupboard and check...and with a sigh of relief it's ceramic. Life is good! Thank you for such great questions!

Glad to hear that!

I haven't been able to find any ceramic crock pots yet...they're all stainless steel/not :S Going to have to do some more searching

Here is another link you might find interesting: http://wellnessmama.com/13203/glazed-ceramic-pans-safe/

If you are looking for inexpensive cookware, you probably don't want to be looking for any type of safe non-stick cookware because it really doesn't exist.....you can buy cheap, realize it doesn't stand up after a few months, then you'll be back looking.....anything that is going to last is not going to be cheap ! ! ! One of the major problems with ceramic cookware is that we DON'T READ the manufacturer's instructions on the proper care, cleaning & operation of these type pans & utensils.....

Those of you shoppers who are finding two for one sales of Teflon coated, PTFE or PFOA based items are most likely seeing manufacturers/wholesalers/vendors trying to beat the 2015 moratorium on those types of cooking items & unload their on-hand stock levels.....

Hey Dinosrawr, was wondering where you ran across any indication that there are ceramic surfaces with PFOAs in or on them, because by the nature of the beast the ceramic would have to have a coating, much like a glaze baked onto it.....and while I do know of lead, cadmium & other toxic substances being fired into or as part of the coloring of decorative ceramic ware, I question anything of glass or ceramic composition containing any PTFEs or PFOAs, though I may very well be wrong.....

I've come across cheap ceramic at stores like Target that have ceramic labels but still contain PTFE's or PFOA's - I can never remember the difference. It was likely PTFE's. Same with aluminum pans and such. I checked the back and was actually surprised myself, because I was also under the impression that ceramic anything would be completely free of them. Especially since they're phasing that stuff out...

Thank you for the links! I will definitely read up on them.

I heard back from Crock-Pot and they told me that ALL of their slow cookers are PTFE and PFOA free.

I have trouble believing that since I can only find one pot on their site that specifically mentions it's free of both. None of the others do.

It's a bit frustrating trying to find safe cookware when Teflon seems to be on everything!

Katie, I'm not sure where you may have gotten this nervousness/concern over crockery & pottery, but give Health Canada a call.....they should be able to relieve your concerns.....here's a link with phone numbers.....

Good luck.....
