Cairo the Ekkie!
So Cairo will be 1.5yo next month, and we're expecting him to become a typical angsty teenager soon.

Lately, he's been doing this kind of thing:

We're not sure how to interpret it, especially since we're first time bird owners (I don't count my childhood chickens as reading bird behaviour).

Is he just playing? Is he letting off excess energy? Is he frustrated?

How should we be responding to him?

He is gorgeous!

(this is probably the first time I saw an ekkie actually fly! Impressive, those contrasting colours that pop out at all of a sudden. Stunning!)

Aw he’s so handsome!

He’s just playing :) and has very strong flight. Looks great!

You don’t have to respond in any kind of way, let him have his fun. , but if you want to though, you can put some structure around it. It’s a great opportunity to teach him flighted recall, to fly to you con command.

I was going to say the same thing! I like how he pops the red! To me it looks like he feels good and is entertaining himself or hoping to attract a mate

I was going to say he is interested in something outside the window, maybe wild birds.

Oh! Good to know he's a happy boy, then :) He does love flying around the house, and every weekend we take him out to fly on his harness at the nearby parks.

He is recall trained, though less responsive when moody, so we'll definitely take advantage of his energy to increase his practice times. His previous family had him free-flight trained even.

For those of you who like seeing him fly:

He’s so beautiful, and looks like he enjoys the flying time!
