Sun Conure - Mango
Hi there!
I'm a frequent reader, but not a big poster. Our sun conure Mango is now a little over a year old. He's very affectionate and loves hiding in his happy hut grabbing at our fingers and nibbling them while on his back. And whenever there's music on, he can't help but dance - very cute!
I just have a couple of questions.
1. He seems to hate being on any sort of flat surface e.g tables, the floor. Could there be some kind of problem with his claws/feet or is it normal for some birds to just not like it? I want to teach him to roll over, but its rather impossible while he won't sit on a flat surface!
2. While he has improved a bit, Mango really doesn't like visitors. He is okay with my father in law, but with anyone else he puffs up, sways and will bite them if they attempt to talk to him. We've tried putting him away when people are over, we've tried keeping him out and ignoring his behaviour, we've tried quietly reassuring him. We're not sure what the best course of action is. He was fine for the first few months that we had him, but then I guess our house became his territory and he doesn't like intruders. Any suggestions?

I can only guess on the table/floor. Does it feel slippery maybe? Or it could be cold. Wood and tile floors can feel pretty cold in winter compared to carpeting. Hard surfaces such as wood and tile are poor heat conductors and insulators. And heat rises so the floor is colder than near the ceiling. Also are his nails too long? If the ends of his toes are sticking up due to the length of his nails he may be uncomfortable.

As for visitors, yes, parrots often get territorial of the room their cage is in. Rowdy owns this room, not me! I would let him see the visitors aren't threatening, by not letting them approach him right away. They need to be told they should not stick their fingers in the bird's cage or try to play with it's toys. People will do that at my house anyway. It's not a dog and does not want to play fetch with you. They need to sit down, talk and act normal and she will begin to relax. She has come to know certain people over the years as well and will settle down much faster when those people are here compared to total strangers. And everyone who has stayed over a few days is welcomed much easier than those who haven't.

Don't worry my sun conure is the same
Hates flat sur***es and doesn't like other people that's just who they are they don't like strangers rocky is the same he screams if anyone else comes in the house because it's an intruder to him.

Try doing your training on the couch or on the grass outside if you have a leash or clipped wings

Hope this helps
