My birds: Skyler/Sky, violet Indian Ringneck. Mother's birds: Norman, African Grey and Mildred, Blue Crowned Conure.
Cookie has finally started molting. She has lots of tiny pin feathers on her face and she is losing a lot of old feathers. I can only see the new feathers when I look underneath her old feathers because they are JUST starting to grow in. When her primaries grow back I'm going to keep her flighted.

I feel worried about her molting though because I don't want her new feathers to grow in horrible colours like last year and then have to wait a year for her to molt them out again, I'm hoping her new feathers don't turn black like before and also I don't want her to start chewing her tail when it grows back.

Her tail is so short now that she can't easily chew it, she still can, but not as much. I was thinking of trimming it even shorter before the new tail feathers grow in to break the habit of chewing them. Would that be a good idea? Would trimming her tail really short so she can't chew it break the habit?

She seems happier than a few months ago and she smells better, so I think the aloe detox is helping. I've been giving her lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and a very small amount of pellets.

I will take some pictures of her soon and post them here to show everyone what she looks like currently.

I think the only issue with trimming the tail feathers is if you do plan on letting her flights grow out, they use their tails quite a bit for directioning. It's good that her feathers are doing better though! I really do hope they grow in nicely

I wasn't planning on keeping her tail short, I just meant before her new tail feathers grow in I could trim her old ones. She lost a secondary flight feather today but I don't think she has lost any primaries yet and I don't see any growing in either, so I think it will be awhile before she can fly again.

I will leave her tail alone for now.

Thanks. :)

She is even cuter when she hops along the floor. I will get a video of her sometime hopping. It is adorable.

The video won't load tonight on my iPad... But I'm glad she's molting, and hopefully she'll keep the gorgeous new feathers! Fingers crossed. Good luck Cookie! :)

Oh my gosh, she is soooo adorable! What a little sweetheart. I think it is a good idea to leave her tail feathers alone. I say that because if she is chewing them already, trimming them could cause her to chew them more instead if less. I've read very little about aloe detox. What are the benefits? I'm looking forward to more pics of your sweet girl.

Thanks. I will post some pictures soon. :)

Aloe detox has many benefits for both people and birds. It can be used to detoxify the liver.

Thanks. :) She seems so much happier now. For months she wouldn't say anything, but now if I go up to her cage she often: screams "KISS!", says "Hey Cookie", screams "BEEP BEEP!", dances while telling me "dance", or she just plays "up down" (she moves up and says "up" and then she moves down and says "down"). She says more words than that too. I will get a video of her talking and being her strange self when I get time.

How cute she says all that! :) Even "up" when standing up and "down" when moving down! That's really impressive. Wow conures are talented!

Edit: I didn't mean to imply that I was surprised that conures were talented, it's just that that's cockatoo level stuff! :)

She can talk better than the other three birds in the house. Even better than Norman the African Grey. She talks pretty clearly too. Especially when she screams "KISS!" in my face. She learned to play "up down" not long after I got her.

My mother's Sun Conure (Erik) is pretty smart too. If you talk he mumbles repeatedly like he is having a conversation with you. He also pretends he is eating if you eat or drink something, he moves his beak like he is eating and makes eating/drinking noises. Cookie also acts like she is eating if you eat or drink something. She learned it from Erik. :D

Sounds like a fun household of birdies there Emily :)

Robin and Raven (Poicephalus and Pionus) are super smart in their own ways, but they just show it differently. There is always the individual personality too, like you said Cookie talks better than Norman the Grey! What a great bird! :)

It is fun, but it can be pretty crazy and loud too.

Erik and Norman can talk too, just not as well as Cookie. Erik doesn't talk much, he can say a few words, and he says "kiss" pretty well, but his talking isn't his best quality, he makes up for it in other ways. Norman doesn't talk much either, but he makes various sounds and he can say a few things. He can be pretty funny too. Cookie can say ten short words and seven sentences.

Emily, what an interesting group of birds you have and I love their names! Eric, Norman and Cookie, perfect.

Thanks. :)

She is really sweet compared to what she was like when I got her. She used to bite and scream all the time, but now she is quiet and sweet.
