What kind of toys are your birds favorites? Loki is my first conure (I was raised with big birds, with a B&G being the first bird I was ever exposed to other than budgies and tiels when I was really young) and I find that, while maybe it's his personality, he doesn't seem to like the "typical" toys.

Do any of you have experience with making your own toys? I made Loki a toy for Christmas, that he destroyed in a matter of 2 weeks (which I did expect). I made it from my knitting yarn and some wood beads and a couple of mother-of-pearl pieces. He loved it. He also prefers bells to display is displeasure in something (usually being put away when he didn't want to be, just glad it's not screeching!). Yet I've noticed he doesn't really "play". He nibbles, he rubs (malting has made him uber itchy, poor guy!) but I haven't seen a lot of play behavior.

He craves attention, probably because he didn't get any for the first year of his life, so if we're home, he prefers to be right with us. Not necessarily on us, but near us at minimum. I even bought him a larger than necessary cage so I could give him more toy choices and room to play, but he HATES it! He rarely goes inside it unless I force him in to it. If he's not near us, then he prefers to be on top of the large cage rather than be in it and playing. Not really sure what to make of it.

Any suggestions are welcome!! Like I said, Loki is my first "small" parrot and I haven't had birds in several years. I'm far from an expert and am always willing to listen to advice. Thanks!!:green2:

Got my first Conure Saturday and after buying him and his cage, I was limited on money to spend on toys so I got creative and made him some toys he enjoys. I hooked plastic ring shower curtain holders together and hung it at the top of his cage. I also bought a dog chew toy that is used as a rope perch :p I'll be buying him some actual bird toys this weekend when I get paid again but hey, it's entertained him for now. Oh and I'm mysteriously missing a key off my laptop. Hmm.. wonder what beak coulda done that..

Loki just isn't interested in playing unless he's forced to, that includes balls and such :-/

Haha, you won't believe me. I found it in a pile of dog toy ropes in a Dollar Tree store. I picked it up and instantly thought of how well it could be used as a perch. I paid $1 for it and he loves to climb, chew, sit and swing on it. :D

Is it safe for them to chew on leather? I ride horses and I have a piece of leather from my bridle he enjoys chewing on. It is thick and he has yet to put a dent into it, but he will sit there and mess with it all day
