Scrappy the GCC
About three weeks ago, we adopted a four year old GCC from a nice couple. Unfortunately, it they were giving him dried fruit instead of fresh fruits and veggies. We are trying to to switch him over, and he is not having any of it. He pulls it out and drops it to the bottom of the cage, and refuses even fruit. Should I just keep on it, and wait till he "breaks", or is there some way to ease the transition?

Try juice apple or OJ if he likes one of those try dipping the fruit into the juice let him see it dripping juice he will lick and maybe chew on the fruit to get the juice. Most likely he doesn't see fruit as food, you can try baby carrots they are crunchy so you can offer them almost to the point of being pushy if he at first bite it just to get out of his face thats ok because he will get the taste of the sweetness and soon will realize it's food.

Put him on the counter top in front of a few grape slices, apple slices and carrot slices. Get on your knees in front of him and slowly nibble away at the fruit showing him how good and messy it is. Make slurpy noises and make it look fun. Give it time and he will join in the fun. If he sees you eating it then he eventually will.

What is he eating now? And how are you presenting the food to him?

As mollygreencheeks said - if you make it into a "flock event" he'll be more likely to go for the fresh vegies and fruit, maybe if you even have a bit of a fruit salade for yourself in a bowl, have him on your shoulder or even on the edge of the bowl and he'll be dying to see what get's your attention! It's "only" been three weeks as well so give him a bit of time to adjust, he may just not be 100% comfortable with his new parrents and that may make him more fussy for eating new things.

Others have said this, but eat it in front of your bird, visually relishing every bite. Don't let him try any at first, and just let him pine. If you have another bird, let your GCC watch the other one eating it.

I know it's a new bird, so you may not have started any trick training with him, but another thing that may work is if you use small pieces of the fruit as treats for doing his tricks. That'll kind of fool him into thinking it's something good.

Here's a great article which explains what I just said better and more thoroughly. Good luck!

Trained Parrot Blog - How to Get Parrot to Eat Fresh Foods

I buy canned fruit such as pears and peach masks, without any included sugar. How does i compare it with fresh fruit with regards to health and nutrients? When I get attends my collage life some times i eat the canned fruit may be its fresh or not!thanks!!

Is this spam????

Canned fruit is not healthy for parrots. Canned anything with preservatives, sugars, salts, etc added is not nearly as great as fresh.

No that is not spam. In fact it is highly recommended by many avian vets that if you do not have time to prepare fresh fruits and veggies that canned fruit cocktail (no sugar added) is a suitable substitute as is frozen veggie mix. Of course fresh is always better.

How strange, the post from Warren is now gone. I suspect it was spam after all.

I have not heard of any avian vet recommending canned fruits and veggies if fresh can't be fed.... but I have heard of frozen fruits and vegetables as well as dried fruits.
