Help! I'm kind of worried! 2 weeks ago, my conure pushed a cheap glass vase over the table and it shattered. I thought I meticulously cleaned the area but I was wrong!

I heard Limbo chewing on something crackling for a good 15 secs. I immediately thought 'glass' so I offered a seed and he dropped a tiny shard. It's the size of a grain of rice but very flat. I see no other pieces lying around. I gave him peanut butter and water. He is acting normal. I am not entirely sure if he ingested some. What do you think I should do??

PS. Vet is closed till Monday.

I'm not sure as I have not experienced this. Don't birds sometimes ingest calcium grit? Aren't those also sharp?

What is a calcium grit?

What is a calcium grit?

Basically, seashells ground into a coarse mix, although personally, I'd rather have the stuff from the beach that nature's already ground up. Lacking teeth, some bird species ingest pebbles and other hard objects to grind up food in their stomach. Sometimes places sell formed "cakes" of tiny seashells glued together for birds to chew on.

Well sea shell is kind of like glass isn't it? Do you think my bird would intentionally ingest the glass? A tiny piece dropped from his beak, he was making grinding noises with it.

no, sea shell is entirely different that glass.

If you don't see any outward signs of distress, then he should be fine. this may take a weeks to ensure he is ok,.

if he has ingested a tiny piece it may take some time before any troubling signs are apparent.

glad you were there when it happened!

What a scary thing to happen, thank goodness you were nearby.

It if were me, and I knew Mishka had chewed some of the glass, I would take him to the vet and have it checked out.

It could take a few weeks to work itself out of the body, in the intern it could be dangerous causing internal damage.

I say rather be safe than sorry.

I agree with Ant. If he's ok now, good. But have him checked on Monday - better safe than sorry. He may have ingested teeny tiny pieces that could cause terrible damage. Please keep us updated. Good luck to you both!

U should get your bird checked by a vet but if its been 2weeks and your bird hasn't stopped eating then he should be fine

Thanks! This happened several years ago and my conure was tested fine by vet thankfully. No issues after :)
