Conure adoption, rebonding?

Hey everyone, i'm new to this site and the world of parrots (more of a reptile person myself), and was wondering if I could get a couple of things cleared up.

I'm hoping to adopt a male green cheek sometime in the future, they seem like the type of bird that fits well with my lifestyle, ie being small and quiet, although I do understand there are exceptions to the latter :).
I am not 100% certain if I will get one yet, I still have so much research to do.

I am looking to adopt, but I am worried about bonding, I've heard that GCC have a tendency to bond to one person, so if i was to adopt a GCC from a person or society and the bird had already bonded to someone, is it unlikely to bond with me? I'm looking for a friendly companion bird more than anything.

I know parrot abandonment is a HUGE issue, even here in Australia it's pretty bad. I would prefer to adopt if possible, but would it be better to buy one from a breeder if I wanted one 'unbonded'?
Feel free to add any experiences or link to pages
Thanks for any information :) :green2:

Older birds absolutely can and do bond to their new owners :) just take it slow, be patient, and you will reap huge rewards!

Archie (Patagonian conure) joined us in February this year. He's old, no one is sure exact age but our vet just says he's about a million years old haha.

He has gone from a very unhappy boy to the joy in our lives. Bonding took a while but he settled with lots of patience.

If you need any help when you get your bird everyone here will be more than willing to answer all your questions [emoji3]

Thank you SilverSage and Nicky76, i'll defiantly make sure to adopt now, I got all the time and patience for a bird :) i'll have tons more questions eventually, and when I get the little guy i'll post an update.
Thanks again!

Like everyone else said, adopting is great and yes the bird can bond to you with some patience and love. One thing about adoption though, that I didnt see mentioned, that is great, is that when you adopt a bird, you can let the bird pick you. If you visit different birds youll see, some hit it off right away and some hate you, and many times its instant, which can make things easy. Keep us updated, good luck!

Welcome! Ditto on everything said! Especially with GCC, they love companionship so much.
My JoJo is a perfect example. Hated everyone, I walked in, he jumped over to me.
We are two years into the honeymoon!

I had adopted a 20 yr. old GCC from a shelter after her owner had died. She bonded very well with me and was a real sweetheart. She passed away last December at the age of 21.5 yrs. Glad to have been able to give her this time with me.
In July of this year I adopted a GCC, also from the shelter, who had arrived as a stray. She is "young" as per the vet, but a closer guess at her age is difficult. But again, she has bonded with me.
So, adopting a GCC works well. Birds adapt if you are able to give them a good home.

Thanks Loko! I didn't even think about that haha, it would make it much easier to weed out the ones that hated me, and find one with personality traits I liked.
Flboy, thanks! you are very lucky haha, I hope to have something like that with my GCC.
Reni, sorry to hear about your loss, I'm glad she got to have a great last stretch of life. That's convinced me, I'd like to give a unfortunate bird a great home.

My lil Booger (SC) was a rescue. Took him every bit of about 1 day before he was part of the family. I was really worried about my BFA and him getting along.. but with proper introduction under a careful eye they have become best buddies as well. Booger may be an exception to the rules.... but he shares his affections willingly with my wife, myself, and Cookie.... honestly hes the most loving bird I have ever had as well as one of the smartest.
