I'll be moving into a new apartment with gas appliances in about two months. Does anyone live in a home with gas appliances, and can you tell me if it affects your birds?
We are moving (very soon) INTO a home with gas... If gas homes were not okay, many people wouldn't be able to keep birds Years ago all homes had it, and people have kept birds for many decades!
Just make sure there are no gas leaks. If you smell it, you'd need to contact the gas company (or in this case the landlord or management company) to stop the leak, or re-light pilots to make it safe for ALL living in the home including the humans
Gas appliances (especially modern ones with all the safety features) are fine for birds At which point they become toxic for your bird, they are also toxic for you (i.e. a gas leak). We lived in an OLD apartment with an ANCIENT gas stove and furnace for over 4 years. Never an issue with Kiwi. I did freak a few times when the pilot light went out on the furnace and you could smell gas, but I just shut him in the bedroom with the electric radiator for heat (gas furnace was in the living room) and cracked some windows to air it out.
What I would be concerned about is the oven lining. Many new ovens have non-stick interiors, and you need to check that out. You may end up having to use a smaller countertop oven with a stainless interior that you buy and not cook in the oven. That is IF it is nonstick inside, which it very well may not be, but better to have a plan of action that to be unsuspecting Check the burner drip pans too. You may need to buy aluminum ones if they are non-stick and can store the ones that belong on the stove until you move.
We use gas. No problems as long as the burners are completely turned off.
Do a good walk through with your new landlord/manager. Check the pilot lights, the stove burners for prompt ignition. Too much gas buildup when the fire finally lights will make it look like the Great and Powerful Oz lives in your stove.
