hello

My sulphur crested cockatoo just lay an egg i want to know should i remove it from her cage because she has been at the bottom of the cage for almost 12 hours and hasn't said anything. Also i put some paper and i think she is trying to make a nest so should i remove the paper?
Also what should i do to stop her from doing that again? Thanks

Advising to remove the egg I not easy. Have it there is quit unnessesary but on the other hand if you remove it there is a big chanse that she will make a new egg. But anyway if me I would remove it. Nesting and egg behavior is a natural thing but is influenced by what they are eating so I should surgest that you diskussed this with a vet.

Yea, go to a vet. However I wouldnt remove the egg just yet. I've read that this can cause a bird to go into excessive egg laying. Try letting her sit on it until she realizes its not going to hatch. She'll abandon it. Of course if it cracks or something remove it because then you could have a bacteria issue.

I removed the egg and she has started to play, and talk more. She does sometimes try to find the egg. I think I will keep the egg away from here. How long does it take them to lay another egg?

I have heard of people putting "fake eggs" in the cage with lovebirds and tiels to keep them from laying eggs, it seems like if they think they already have eggs they will not lay anymore. I even found this site, although I'm sure you could probably find something similar in a craft store or possibly even a toy store. Fake Bird Eggs, Plastic Bird Eggs, Stop Chronic Egg Laying, Bird Breeding Supplies, Plastic Dummy Eggs, Immitiation Eggs, Artificial Bird Eggs, Cockatiel, Conure, Parrot, Finch, Canary, Cockatoo, Budgie, Parakeet, Lovebird

Sulphur's usually lay 2 eggs. I would give her some form of calcium, either in liquid or powder on her favourate foods.

Whether or not to remove the egg. I have never heard of a sulphur being a chronic egg layer as they only have a season. It is true that sometimes they will lay a second clutch if the first is destroyed. I personally would see how she reacts to the removal of the egg if she doesn't seem to phased by it well just take it away.

Laying eggs is such a natural part of a female parrots life there isn't any need to take her to a Vet at this point unless your worried about egg laying problems such as egg binding, chronic egg laying, yoke stroke or yoke peritonitis.

My cockatoo laid 2 eggs in June, then 2 eggs in July even though I'm giving her homeopathic meds to make her stop. She lays them mostly on my shoulder and they run down my arm...she doesn't even see them. She doesn't know what an egg looks like. I'm worried though that she will keep this up. I just lost a female cockatiel to egg-laying excessively.
