Ok, I know cockatoos have a "birdy" voice but shouldn't you be able to understand it? Tonight while playing "60s music and dancing with Zazu, he got really into it and started chattering up a storm! It was a first and it was hysterical. The problem is I couldn't understand a thing he was saying! It's such a funny garbled little voice! Munchkins on helium comes to mind... I think I caught an attempt at 'I love you" which I have been saying to him a lot but as to everything else - I'm clueless. It was most definitely cockatoo speak, not at all like his squawk. I'm sure he knows exactly what he is trying to say. Do you think it will get more clear or do I need to bring in a speech pathologist? :white1:

From what I've read and know about cockatoos, they aren't known to be great talkers. Amigo came to me with two clearly spoken words..."hi there". He can change the way he says those two words, sometimes he sounds very sinister, sometimes happy, sleepy, excited, etc., but still only those two words which, to me, is better than screaming at me!

I think there are many 'talking' birds out there whose speech could only be understood by a 'mother' ;)! Kitty says quite a few phrases, but most people only recognize them after I tell them what she is saying. She has a very cartoony voice.

Rome has a pretty good vocabulary for a Too but she also has what we call her 'Jibberish' talk. By jibberish I mean that we cant understand a thing she is saying to us. She will talk to us at length in her jibberish talk and usually will break out into moments of laughter during the 'conversation' that she is having with us. We play along like we completely get what she is saying, even though we haven't a clue. If shes mad at me she will raise her voice and rant in Jibberish. Anytime she meets new people she has full on jibberish conversations with them. As long as you respond with something when she pauses she'll continue on with it. I swear when she meets new people she saying 'one time this happened and then there was this other time, and yesterday...' It cracks us up.

Rome's vocab is: step up (only said when she wants to step up, usually accompanied with raising her foot at the same time), I love you (which she never says by herself only if shes with us), Where were you (only said if I've been gone for a while or I'm late bringing her in). She'll also say 'hello', that one is the only word that she says all the time over and over again not attached to any particular behavior. She can say Romeo (her old name) but hasn't said it in a while.

She scares me with how intelligent she is.

Yoshi was talking jibberish for a while , but now he says a few new things like,
Yoshi , not Yoshi , lol. And he learned "little bit" from Rosie . His hello has gotten extremely clear now . He is trying to say something else , it almost sounds like "I love you", which I say to them a lot , lolol.
It does take them time to say something new , I think they want to become proficient at it before saying it to us so as not to embarrass themselves , lolol.
Give Zazu some time before you call in the speech therapist :)

I second Mulcan1. Our Cockatoo said his name, step up, gave kisses, told you to give kisses, whistled, etc. but if you tell him to tell you a story he goes off for 2 minutes straight just talking nothing but jibber jabber! i think the toos have thier own secret language. My father in law's does the same thing...

LMAO !!! I think they do too , my Yoshi and Rosie do have their own private conversations when grooming :)

LMAO! Reminds me of "Pinky and the Brain"... "What are we going to do tonight Brain?" "What we do every night Pinky" "Uh, dress up in tu-tu's and prance around" "No, try to take over the world!!!!"

Okay, sorry. Had to.

Sugar has only one clear word, and that's Hi. She also does a sort of laugh "Hehehe" but she has a sort of extremely quiet jibberish she does as well. My friend's Too's (Umbrella and Moluccan) say a few words (I've never heard the Moluccan say anything, he only makes noises when I'm around - he hates women) but they do a lot of mimicking. The backing up of the garbage truck is their favorite!

Wow. Tropical birds in Alaska. Did they say what species of too? Sounds like a lot of money for an older too - unless he's really well trained. Or it's just a matter of supply and demand.
Do you have generators for back up heat up there? We have well water here and had to get a generator so we would have water for all our pets should the power go off.:white1::rainbow1:
