So, I am thinking about getting a cockatiel. And I was wondering, if me having other birds would impact on whether or not I could teach it too whistle? I plan on getting a boy, and I know there is no sure way that it would turn out to be a whistler to begin with, but if he was would I still be able to teach him to whistle? He wouldn't be housed with my two other birds. (IRN and GCC):yellow1:

What I've been told by my aunt who is a breeder is the males are better able to talk and all cockatiels can whistle. Start with a wolf whistle. wheeeet whoo the human male pick up line whistle, it's easy for them to pick up, then you can move on to whatever you have in mind.

No, other birds have no impact whatsoever in a male tiel learning how the whistle. The male tiels whistle all on their own even if they were never near other tiels around him. However if you can whistle yourself and you keep whistling the same thing often tiels usually pick that up and start imitating it.... if not male tiels will make up their own songs. Females tiels do not sing at all... if you want a bird that sings a male tiel is the way to go.... except not all male tiels are very vocal. For example one of my male tiels is super quiet! He sings but very little and some days he doesn't sing at all whereas my other male tiel sings every day :)

... but Rascal is not the norm... usually male tiels will sing a little here and there a little... or a lot.

Showing my age here... My cockatiel learned to whistle "Bridge on the River Kwai" for me, along with wolf whistle, and other short ones. He could also say his name and pretty bird. He was a total doll, but would bite my husband mercilessly, lol. Also, my husband said I was tone deaf, and therefore the bird whistled tone deaf. I don't know if that's true, but my husband has perfect pitch, so maybe.

I tried so hard to teach my cockatiel the Hunger games whistle but all he do is the wolf whistle lol

My cockatiel can whistle a bunch of little tunes, most of which I taught him while he was caged with another bird.

I would think that as long as he is bonded to You, you can teach him to whistle with or without other birds around.

The wolfie whistle was the very first thing I taught BB...It took him about three days to have it down perfectly. :p

I am a first time 'tiel Dad. I am truly amazed of the intelligence of these tiny little creatures. He was only 4.5 months old when he picked ME to go home with.At ten months old,he knew the wolfie whistle perfectly. He learned a good portion of the Andy Griffith theme song and Addams Family theme. He learned his very first wordS:eek: Not just one or two single syllable words..but WORDS put together. Very first words were "BB good boy?" After his first set of words it seemed like every other day he was learning more and more, and I didn't HAVE to teach him,he picked them all up on his own.

"Little boy..little boy"...now he even mixes things up.." BB good little boy"..took just days for Addams family where he does the "tock tock" thing,of banging his head up and down. EVERY MORNING when I get home, its "HELLO?"...and he only says this in the morning! ( there are a few YouTube Vids of him talking) he talks pretty darn clear too

OK...i'll stop now.....I think you get the gist of things lol :p
