So right now our house is a little tightly packed. As my mom would say, we are trying to fit 10 pounds of stuff in a 2 pound box. My wife's aunt is staying with us for a couple months in between living in one place and moving to another. As a result Tiki was kicked out of his spare room. We didn't think it was fair to put him back in the hustle and bustle of the living room since he was doing so much better in the quieter spare room, so he ended up in our bathroom.
As a disclaimer, I want to point out that since he has been in there, we have not used any cleaning products at all in the bathroom other than wiping down the sinks and toilet with dishsoap. We don't use hairspray so that is not an issue, and when we use perfume, we now go into our bedroom to use it so it is not getting sprayed in the bathroom.
This is also only a temporary arrangement until her aunt moves out at the end of the month. Then we are going to turn the spare room into the bird room (HA HA I WIN, I FINALLY GOT MY BIRD ROOM). I am doing some work at the local rescue I foster for, cleaning cages as stuff, in exchange for them custom building me a playstand more suited for Tiki to be comfortable on, so he can come out more often when things are quiet and not have to be held or be on the floor when he is out.
Anyway, I fed Tiki breakfast the other day and then we had to go to my mother-in-laws because she has surgery last week and needed some help around the house. We have our new dogs crate set up in the bathroom for at night because she is in heat and we have light colored sheets, and for some reason my wife said she is not allowed to sleep in bed until she is done with that, I'll let you draw your own conclusions. During the day, we leave the dogs out in the living room with blankets laid out on the couch with our bedroom door closed.
Well, when we got home later that afternoon, I went in to see Tiki, and realized I never closed the door to his cage after I gave him breakfast. However, he was sitting contently on his fleece swing, so I figured he probably never even realized the door was open, since he's blind and can't see it, so no real harm done. The door was closed so the dogs couldn't get in there and he was in his cage, all was good. I just closed the cage and went about my day.
However, later that evening, I went into the bathroom to change into my pajamas and get ready to go to bed and I noticed there was a poop on the side of the dog crate. The side furthest away from Tiki's cage. As in a bird would have had to been perched on the dog crate to poop there. So Mr. Innocent wasn't so innocent after all. When I am really amazed by is not that he got out of his cage, but how he got back in. He is in the top cage of a double stack, the bottom is used for storage just so he isn't in a very tall cage were he to fall. So somehow when he got out, he remembered exactly how he climbed down and climbed back up the same way to get back into his cage.
I am just grateful that for one, we keep the birds and dogs separated when we are gone, and for two, that because we have so many animals and young nephews, we don't really have anything dangerous that can be easily gotten into. However, I am not taking my luck for granted, and I will be double checking cages before I leave from now on. I do not want to push my luck and end up with a sick or injured bird.
