Cleaning cages

To earn the trust of a bird do you give me new water and food everday or what?

How long does one wait to clean a birds cage?

Hello,

1- You should provide the bird with fresh water daily or even several times a day if it gets dirty if they are soaking themselves into it/bathing etc.

2- Also, You should provide enough & balanced food daily, either as a one meal (Free feed) or split it into several smaller meals during the day if you are training him (That's what is called the training diet)

3- Regarding cleaning the cage, Well, We do clean it everyday, I mean I do change the papers everyday and sometimes several times a day if it gets too messy. I do clean the cage itself and the bars, grills etc once or twice a week, and of course, vacuuming everyday is essential.

Leftover seeds and/or pellets can usually be left for the next day but soft foods,fruits & veggies should be changed daily, with leftovers thrown out...if you live in a hot climate you should change/throw out soft foods, fruits & veggies every couple of hours because of the potential for rapid bacteria growth.....

I change papers every couple of days and wipe down the whole cage once every week or two. Depending on how bad it needs it. I clean food and water bowls daily with soap and water because mine get vegetables and cooked food almost every day. That always needs to be emptied out and the bowl cleaned so bacteria doesn't start to grow.

You should give your bird fresh water several times a day. Also give your bird fresh fruit and veggies daily mixed with nuts and legumes. Also a well balanced diet of pellets and seed as a treat.

You should do what ever you need to do to keep things clean and fresh. The bird will adjust to your schedule. Be consistent and do what;s right.

We wipe down the cage everyday and clean and change her tray. But, I will admit that it's been a while since I thoroughly scrubbed the cage.

I scrub Mishka's cage thoroughly each day....(that's just me LoL)

I scrub Fargo's cage each and every day so it is spotless, even though Fargo is actually a very clean bird, my friends ask me why i do it each day and i say because he should have a clean home to live in like me!!

I am a bit of a neat freak!

SO there are other guardians like me.
Mishka is not a messy bird at all unless he decides to play with his pellets, throwing them out the cage, and waiting for me to put them back again.
He always poppies in the same spot in his cage THANKS MISHKA

My day starts off cleaning 4 bird cages. Yes, each and every day I clean their trays, scrub the grates and wipe down the cage bars and perches (if needed).

Once a week I take the grates outside to thoroughly wash both sides. Also once a week I take the trays out and wash both sides with hot soapy water.

Once a month I take all toys out and thoroughly clean the entire cage with hot, soapy water.

Perhaps a bit excessive, but I'm not fond of hard, dried up birdy poop and/or dried, crusted on fruits and veggies. :54:

I also vacuum around and under the cages daily.

Parrots are like toddlers (not that I'd know, haven't had kids yet) and leave a mess everywhere they go... and I practically follow thema round cleaning up after them! Here is my cleaning routine.

Morning:
pull up the top layer of newspaper and compost it
collect and wash the water and wet-food bowls
put out fresh water
chop up the fruit and veggies for the wet food
hand-vac up seeds that have fallen on the floor since the night before

evening:
vacuum
spot-mop the floor with a wet rag
change the paper

weekly:
wipe the cages and perches down with vinegar, scrub the poop and food stains
steam mop the floor

I could probably wipe the cages down daily but I already spend an hour a day just cleaning and doing food-prep my birds and am too lazy to scrub the cages.

Soon I will buy a handheld steam mop for cleaning the cages.

Do you layer your newspaper in the tray? That helps with time because you just pull off the top layer and throw it out.

To keep the grate clean, I put another sheet of newspaper on top of the grate under the spots my birds spend more their time to catch their poop so the grate doesn't get a little poop mountain stuck on the bars. This wouldn't work if your birds like to go play on the floor, though (fortunately mine don't want to go hang out down in their poop!).

I wash Pixel's water and food bowls out at least once a day (more if she decides to make soup), change the papers daily, do 'spot cleaning' (aka obvious poop/food stains) a couple times a week, and fully wipe down the cage each weekend. I also sweep daily since I get ants in my house and had a mouse previously (he's gone to a better place *cough*).

I'd be more of a neat freak but I work full time and do correspondence courses so I just don't have the time . I can have Pixel out and study at the same time but cleaning and studying at the same time are beyond my multitasking abilities lol

Pfft...don't feel lazy!!! I'm a homemaker, so I HAVE the time to do this. Additionally, I NEVER want to hear it from my "other" half that they're messy and/or dirty. :54: ...and I'm many things, but neat freak is NOT one of them. I think it's impossible to be a neat freak if you're living with 2 big macs.
