Parrots
African Grey called Bloo
Hi

I was just wondering if there's any ways to the the claws of my Bloo(African Grey) down, They are really long and sharp from when my mum had her.
Bless her heart, she was scared to go near the parrot because when she cleaned her out once she bit her shoulder and made her bleed... Which is why I've got her now, but i was just wondering if there is any cheap ways of getting her claws down as they are seriously sharp and quite long...

Thanks to anyone that can help!

Pepper's previous owner showed me how she did the claws with a dremmel file, but since I've seen it once I will probably be taking her to a local pet store to get it done.
I got her a cement swing but she will not use it! I keep trying it in different places in the cage. No go. Maybe she just needs to get used to it. But there are several different kinds of perches that help with nails.

Yeah i feel you there, there's a stone swing in her cage she goes on it, but wont stay on it, she prefers her plastic based swing haha, When she was younger she did have a stone perch which she loved, It was coloured and gave off this little chalky stuff which made her feet blue (which i found great when i was younger) It was a proper Parrot perch too haha
I need to see if i can find anywhere that sells them because her Claws are seriously sharp and long If that doesn't work I'll have to take her to the vet or something to see if they can help, as the person we got Bloo from has moved elsewhere so I cant ask them.
Thanks for the advice, im going to look around and see if i can find any online or local stores that sell stone perches for her :)

Yeah let a vet do it or a local pet store if they are really long they may have to be done a couple of times to let the quick die back and not bleed. Thanks for taking care of this bird and your Mother.

:) Thanks for the advice, I will try and find a local pet store and if i cant, The vet will have to do! :p

Even if my mum could handle Bloo, she wouldn't have the time with my 3 younger brothers and my baby sister running around all the time, which is another reason i took her, she wasn't getting the attention she needed and when i went to her house, i would just sit with Bloo and my baby sister would come sit with me and we'd just sit there and play with her, and she used to be really timid and stuff, but recently she's been letting me stroke her entire back/wings which is an amazing step! :) sorry rambling haha

Our local(ish) pet-superstore/garden centre has an avian vet in once a month to do beak and claw clipping session. Costs £15 I think. Standing in the queue is a good way to get to meet other owners and chat. The vet also gave Casper a quick check over too as he was new to us. Casper thought it was a great day out and even said goodbye to the ladies at the checkout tills which made us laugh.
You have to find out which day they do it first though.
