I really hate posting this, especially on a day that is suppose to be filled with joy.
Num Num is not right....at all.
he's puffy, very sleepy, and on the bottom of the cage....now I don't think it's very serious, but it is very concerning.
when I uncovered him this morning he was at the door wanting out, but because it's xmas, all the birds are in their cages today.

later on I went back into the bedroom I found him on the bottom of the cage.....what???....very strange....seemed ok earlier:rolleyes:

I put a heating pad in the cage, along with a heat lamp. I mixed some formula with electrolytes and he refused it.
I sat there holding him close to me, giving him gentle scritches, and he has lots of pin feathers, non are visible.

could be contributing to part of the issue.

I removed Pearl, his mate, and her put her in the cage beside Num Num.he really didn't care he was so tired, which is NOT Num Num. if he is ever removed from her he freaks!,,,,calling and calling and calling out or her....not today, he just went back to sleep while I held him.

what I've noticed is in the past few weeks Pearl has not been letting Num Num near the dish as much, and with plenty of fighting and chasing around the cage....then when I come back in later, they are eating together....but then she starts in on him again and boots him off.

we have put 2 dishes of food in the cage to prevent this, but she seems to protect both of them.....grrrrrr.

Now that she is in the other cage, he ate for 17 minutes non-stop(I timed him)
I had millet on the dish as well, but he went right for the food.

I wondering if all of this is a direct result of Pearl not letting him eat his usual amount of food. it would certainly explain why he is lethargic........he's starving!!!

this whole week he has seemed fine, the poor thing has been starving and has gone unnoticed until earlier today.

ever since Num Num broke his beak, those two have not been the same, at all, always fighting, and she picks on him more now than she has in the past.
I feel so badly for him.

At least he is eating and drinking, and at this point it's the only thing I can think of that might be wrong with him.
just as a precaution I have given him a dosage of Baytril which was left over from his beak operation.

he has been perched for short periods of time, but then climbs down and goes to sleep again.

we are going out for dinner, so I'm praying when I return he has improved!!

so I just checked on him before we leave, and he was eating again....and is now perching....lets hope this continues.....

Beth, hopefully when you get home, Num Num will be feeling better,

Sending best wishes and hugs to you both. Xx

Oh gosh :( poor num num! I hope he gets better and it's just from not eating..

Are you going to keep them separated? Do you think pearl will stop picking on him at some point?

Oh no!!! Not Num Num. :( I truly hope all this is because Pearl's been keeping him from the food - nothing more.

I hope he improves promptly, and that no further actions are required.

Prayers and hugs to you, Beth!!!!

I've just gotten home and Num Num is perched but sleeping.....which is a good sign....the perching part I mean.
tomorrow we will see how he is.....gosh he scared the bejeepers out of me!!!!

I really think it's because of her, that he's not eating enough and not feeling well.

I will keep Pearl separated from Num Num probably permanently, and match her up with another male. she's just to mean for him, which he doesn't deserve.

It also takes him longer to eat with his beak being deformed, so he probably wasn't getting much food coupled with her chasing him away in the past week or so, it was only a matter of time for him to crash....geez this bird stuff sure does keep you on your toes!!....

Beth, I am so glad to hear that Num Num is doing better! Sounds like you have your own Christmas miracle, which you so deserve after all you've been through lately. So happy!!

Oh boy, the worries these babies put us through! I'm so happy he seems to be allright now. Nasty old wife of his! ;)

What happened to his beak if you don't mind me asking?

oh yes, that's right, it happened before you joined on here.....he got his beak caught in a chain link, and broke it in three places:(

you can read my thread...."emergency, need help"...it was done sometime in August.

nasty old wife is right, she was fine with him up until he busted his beak, then she changed :(

Oh Beth, poor Num Num! And wicked Pearl! I think you're right in giving Pearl a new mate: Num Num doesn't need a shrewish wife, but rather one who 'brings him ease'. I hope, now his tummy's full, he springs back to his normal self for you.

Merry Christmas, Num Num! You're still my hero! :)

I'm glad Num Num is ok, it's probably wise not putting Num Num with any mate for awhile, maybe permanently. Because of his beak condition, he should probably be in a cage on his own.

Oh my word, what a scary story about his beak!! :( :(

I'm sure he will perk up now that the old fishwife has been moved away ;)

you guys are so funny, thanks for making me laugh.... yes evil Pearl, bad bad bad!! ;)

talk about a hidden problem, you see birds fighting or having tiffs everyday, but you don't think for one minute one of them might be slowly starving to death right in front of your eyes....maybe I should grow eyes in the back of my head too.

I'm just so very thankful that he is perching again, and still eating and drinking.....he's turned into a little piggy.

He's lost 6 grams in over a 3 week span, so I'm going to give him all the food he needs and wants :) I'll also offer some formula to get some much needed nutrients into him as well.

he was perched this morning when I got up, but still a little puffy.....but I'll take that any day of the week....

@mikey-exactly what I was thinking, the only issue I might have is Pearl is in the next cage right beside him, once he feels better he'll be wanting back with her.
she's always had free flight in the bedroom and I really don't want to put her in the bird room.....this is going to be difficult, they've been together for over a year, so they are very bonded.

he has improved somewhat, he had a bit more energy yesterday....still not the 100% though....hmmmm.

he ran away from me when I went to medicate him, ha ha.

he really likes the heating pad, and stands on it, awake, then will fall asleep, on & off throughout the day, but he does perch from time to time....still a little puffy too.

he eats like crazy, and is drinking.....his poop is a bit off, but that could be from the lack of food, or 'what ever' is going on with him....

mean ol' Pearl ;)
