I want to start making chop mix for our zon and budgie, and I've found a few recipes from other posts, but I was wondering if there are any ingredients I should avoid?? I saw a post where some were saying to avoid kidney beans- if not cooked properly they could be toxic to birds..?

This is the recipe that I use as a starting point, then I add things or remove things depending on what looks good at the store. I always add dandelion greens and leave out the brown rice. Whenever I'm not sure of a ingredient I first check the internet, and if I still feel unsure I call my avian vet and ask.

I have kidney beans in the chop mix, it's part of the 16 bean soup that I buy. I soak it over night per instructions on package then cook them.

Any particular reason you leave out the brown rice? This might be a silly question- but I'm assuming both my birds can eat the same chop mix (just serve different quantities based on their size)?

We're going grocery shopping tonight, so I'm excited to get chop mix ingredients! :D I just really hope they like it! It'd be disappointing to have a freezer full of chop they won't eat :/ I'm sure the dogs would like it though if that were the case hahahha :p

My vet doesn't want me feeding Rosie a ton of grains, so I only include barley and quinoa as I feel they are more beneficial.

Ahhh I see! Makes sense... I remember reading she had some serious health issues when you brought her home

Yeah, she had been eating a staple sun flower seed diet that was killing her. She had organ failure, calcium deficiency, and few other problems. Although it took a long time I was very lucky that all she needed was a excellent diet so her body could sort itself out and sort of 'reboot' itself.
