Cherry pits

My husband thinks I'm straight up foolish for taking the pits out of cherries before I feed them to Dexter. His reasoning is that there is no one to take the pits out in the jungle and he won't eat it just by instinct. I don't know.

Do you pit your cherries before giving them to the fids?

Foolish no not at all.

The seeds of apples and the pits of cherries, peaches, plums, pears, apricots and nectarines are all unsafe to give to your birds. They contain varying levels of a cyanide compound that can cause death.

I pit too.

My hubby says stuff like that sometimes .. I usually respond with "I think there are plants/roots/dirt/clay etc. that parrots ingest in the wild that probably counteract/protect them from toxins that aren't a part of a captive parrots diet"
If that doesn't work..
"Well I figure it's better to err on the side of caution - I know how you hate big vet bills IF she weren't to figure out she shouldn't eat them we'd have an emergency visit on our hands" ~ he gets on board quick then (works for dogs, cats etc.) lol

If all else fails - pit hubby's cherries so he isn't jealous

I take the pits and seeds out of almost everything, and peel anything that can be reasonably peeled. I leave some seeds that I know are okay, like in peppers, but even some I'm pretty sure are fine, like in squash, I remove just to be sure. Anything I can't peel gets soaked in ACV and water, then rinsed well before it's used. My wife complains that I spend more time prepping the pretty chicken's food than our own. It might be true...just a little.

Not a fan of death, so yes, I pit most all fruit for salty. Except banana pits, screw that.
