Charlie Has Hurt his Leg

Three days ago, Charlie( my Canary)and the Budgies were flying in the bird room, as they do everyday. The door was open and I check on them often. When I did one of my checks, there was a spot of blood on the floor in front of Charlie's cage, and he was inside the cage. His leg looked very bruised. I caught him, and put Bactroban on it, and it seemed to improve in the last three days. Bruising looks better, and although he "favours" it, he can use the leg. I opened his cage this morning, and there is blood on the cage lining. He's eating, but is still holding the leg up.

There is no vet here, and to access one I have to take a flight. I'm on my own. Is there anything I can do....

Oh Sharon, poor you and poor Charlie, must be very frustrating not being able to get to a vet nearby and quickly.
Searched and searched the net, not too many links pertaining to canary's with leg injuries. However I came across a very interesting one, other birds leg injuries

Bird Times Magazine Foot Health Page

Hope this is useful in any little way

Poor Charlie :(

I wish I could help with something but I am at a bit of a loss with how to deal with such a small birdy leg. Maybe even phoning the AV might throw something up....?

I'll be thinking of you both. xx

OH Gosh, Sharon. Thats tough not having a vet near by to take the birds to. I hope that Charlie gets better soon, I obviously don't have any offerings of advice. I will be keeping lil Charlie in my thoughts. Do you live in the States, Sharon?

Sharon how is Charlie doing, did you have any luck, attending to his injured leg?
I feel so hopeless not being able to assist.
In our prayers

Thanks for thinking of Charlie. he's still favouring the leg. I put Bactroban on it yesterday, and I will clean and use liquid bandage today. He's singing as I type, so I'm hoping he's not in too much pain...It looks like the injury is partway up the leg, as that's where the coagulated blood was yesterday. The bruising of the whole leg is less though. I wish I knew how he did it....

Sharon, I know you are stressed out.. It sounds like Charlie is a happy bird.. I hope it all it takes is a little more time for him to heal..
Wish I could help out more..

Keep us updated OK.....

He's fine, Mike...thanks for asking! I used Bactroban and liquid bandage...He picked off the liquid bandage, so I just used the Bactroban for several days. There's still a small affected area, but he's using his leg normally, and all the bruising is gone.:)
