How do I know if the chain at lowes or Home Depot is safe for making toys. Also what wood is safe?

Look on the packaging and try to find out what kind out metal the chains are made of, and if it doesn't say, call the manufacturer and ask. The best kind out metal would probably be steel. Here's a link with some information on metal bird toys: Birds Just Wanna Have Fun - The Store for Fun Parrot Toys and Bird Toy Parts

Many different types of wood are bird safe. Here's a link to a list of safe and toxic wood, as well as some foods: Non-toxic for birds list and a list of things that are toxic for birds.

They should have stainless steel chain, but it's bigger links...

All have provided you with good info, though with plastic chain, if you have a chewer, you might not want to use it to hang things.....I know of a bird that had several plastic chains hung across the ceiling, got to chewing on one & ended up doing an unexpected Tarzan vine swing into the wall.....apparently it got its talons caught in the chain & had to ride it out.....

The vet figured that the bird was only bruised & not seriously hurt.....

I use the chain as a hanging toy all by itself. I hang 5 to 7 lengths together from a SS quick link. My fids love to hide in it, bet it up, Swing from the bottom and sometimes just grab one length and pull it as far as they can so it swings wildly around the cage.
