Yes I know, someone is saying "Another diet thread?"
I have looked on this forum and I have searched (not my strong skill I know) for the proper diet for my macaw and whew I am so way off I don't know how to get on the right track. Here is what I was feeding my macaw.
AM - two walnuts, a brazil nut, a pecan, 2-3 almonds, 3-5 hazelnuts, 2-3 peanuts (yuk), 1/2 slice of 15 grain bread all covered with pellets (3/4 cup to a cup of pellets). The bowl is FULL. Also I give him 2 cups of largely chopped veggies (today it was zucchini, bell peppers, and some carrots). And water of course.
PM - fruits or veggies (usually about a cup) and another walnut or brazil nut and about 4 more small nuts (almonds or hazelnuts).
All the AM food is out of the bowl when I get home except for about 1/4 cup of the pellets which I leave in the bowl. Most of it has been eaten but there are a couple of nuts on the bottom of the cage that he missed or flung when looking for something else.
This bird is hungry both morning and evening. He hasn't started foraging yet and it has been several days since I worked him on that so I do need to try that with him again.
I feel like he is getting way too many nuts and maybe too many veggies/fruits. He seems to like to just fling the pellets out of his bowls but I have noticed that he eats some of them in front of me. Any ideas on what to change so that he doesn't lose weight? I haven't weighed him yet but he doesn't seem too big to me.
Thanks so much in advance for sharing your knowledge again.
