Cat carrier for bird?

Hi all!

The day when we will bring home our baby Quaker is fast approaching, and I was trying to think of what to use as a travel carrier for our new fid. I have a cat carrier that is never used that I thought it would make a great travel carrier with some slight modifications (i.e. the addition of a perch, some bowls added). I was wondering if anyone else has any experience doing this as well. Any tips or information is greatly appreciated!

The common three (3) piece cat (small animal) carrier has been a long time standard in moving Parrots.

Yep cat carriers are fine in my book as long as there is a perch, bowls and a toy. Also I would like to add that make sure your quaker can't stick his head through the grate on the door otherwise you could cover the door with some clear acrylic plastic so that he can't hurt himself. A medium "cat carrier" is my transport cage to and from vet for my BFA. Simple addition of a perch.. done deal. Don't bother with food and water bowls cuz he isn't in it that long. Blew the vets mind last visit with ihim when it was time to go and I tapped the top of the carrier and ask Cookie to get in. He jumped right in like I had trained him for weeks to do that. )... made me a proud daddybird.

We use a cat carrier for Archie. As he's got rubbish feet and balance we just have "vet bed" on the bottom for him to stand on. He spends most of the journey to the vets sticking his beak through the grate so he can have it rubbed. We don't bother with bowls but do take water with us in case we got stuck in traffic or broke down [emoji4]

Yep, cat carrier for small to medium birds... and I have a big plastic dog carrier / kennel for my macaw for runs to the vet and such.

I've put perches into some of them, but depending on the tail length, sometimes the perches does not help much.

I personally find it repulsive, the mere idea offends me, the though of a cat carrier for a parrot, but hey; whatever works shouldn't be an issue.

Add some perches inside though. My "parrot" carrier which might hold a small cat has a perch across the middle. It's obviously a parrot carrier though.

Heck deck it out. water bottle and seed tray whatever.

If it was used for a cat, you need to clean it thoroughly (and make sure that it is rinsed/dried etc well before you place a bird in it). You don't want chemical residue or fumes...but, I say this because cats harbor illnesses (innate to their species) which can kill a bird under the right circumstances.

Personally, when it comes to adult birds, I am not a fan of these types of carriers due to their shadowy nature. My bird came home in one, but I haven't used it since because shadowy spaces in older birds can trigger hormones. She is drawn to cave-like spaces, but it's because she wants to nest in them.

That having been said, it has been done and your bird is young still. Like I said, when I adopted mine, I was given a dog carrier that had been modified--a perch was added.

I use a wire cage when travelling with my bird these days...She is an adult and I don't want to trigger any more hormones than those she already has.
