- 1 Senegal Parrot (Cassie) and 4 Parkeets (Tia, Fidget, Tibbin, and Skyler)
Hi everyone,
I would like to introduce, Cassie. She is an 8 month old Senegal parrot. I loved everything I read about Senegal parrots and when I saw her, I fell in love with her. I have owned parakeets and cockatiels for many year but Cassie is my first parrot.
I brought her home from the bird breeders last Friday (May 20th) so today is her 5th day home. She is very sweet. She is slowly getting used to being in her new surroundings but seems to be accepting of new things more and more. She worried me the first few days because she wouldn't eat much at all but now she's eats quite a bit and loves fruit.
I started the first steps in target training a couple days ago and also learning to step up. I have to admit I am AMAZED with how smart she is and how fast she's learning. She hasn't talked or many any noises except an occational squak or beak clicking but, she has learned what two words mean in less then two days!! I would bet on it!
This past Suday I started telling her to "step up" and when she did I gave her a treat. Monday she seemed to understand what to do okay most of the time, but by today there is a clear difference. Today there was a few times when she didn't want to step up. She avioded my hand but the moment I said Cassie step up, she did. She also didn't want back on her play gym perch, she tried nibbleing my finger instead (trying to tell me she wants to stay) but once I told her step up, she got on her perch.
I pretty sure she's also learned the word "touch". Much faster than she did "step up" it seems. I started target training her yesturday with a stick, a clicker, and her favorite treat. I began saying "touch" after I held the stick near her. When she touched the stick, I clicked and gave her a treat. Now just a bit ago today when I helpd the stick about 6 inches from her she started moving away a tiny bit in the opposite direction, I said "touch" and she went over to it and touched the target stick. I was so proud of her!
She seems to learn things so fast. I'm really impressed with her. I can hardly wait to see what else she learns and loves to do.
