carpet cleaning?

I want to get our lower level carpets cleaned. What does everyone do about that? I usually hire someone to come out and steam clean our carpet. Would that be dangerous for the birds? I would also love to get a few of the area rugs in the main level cleaned. Next question is that I burned popcorn in the microwave the day before yesterday. Usually (pre-birds) I would light some scented candles and it would take care of it and clean out the microwave with some kind of strong cleaner. Now I am nervous. What do you usually do? This is not some little burn smell, this was a major "popcorn incident" LOL I am such a candle burner, usually have one burning every day, however now with Kiwi it makes me nervous! I know that the soy ones are said to be ok however I have to order those and I am out! Help

Okay for the microwave I usually just wet a paper towel or a handi wipe and put it inside the microwave and turn on for about 20 seconds once off leave it alone for a few mins and then wipe it clean , you will be surprised how clean it will come . As for the carpets I do my own with my own steam cleaner I bought months ago . Cleaning takes on a whole new meaning when you have birds and also no candles is a policy in my home none whatsoever .

Both beeswax and soy candles are safe for birds. It will take a long time to get the pop stink out of your home. Best thing is fresh air.

oh burned popcorn, yes, not a pleasant smell. Arm and hammer baking soda half opened and hidden behind microwave and refrigerator will help absorb the smell and it has very little scent itself, should be birdie safe. Baking soda helps absorb moisture too I've kept a box inside my refrigerator, truck, shed and laundry room for years. I replace the box anywhere from 6 months to a year when I remember.

I also place eucalyptus branches in my bird cage fresh every day not only do the birds love them they smell good . With my daughters birds l line The bottom of the cage with news paper l change it morning and late afternoon , were l have the bird cage l have large good quality rug , cleaning is easy l spot clean every time birdie poops with kitten carpet cleaner it is great we have No bad smells no stains . hope this helps .

I know that some carpet cleaning companies will steam clean your carpets using only very hot water and steam. Call a avian vet to make sure though. Chemicals are chemicals and they can have a affect on birds respiratory tract. I agree that fresh air for your mico-wave is probably the best or you can clean it using alittle vinegar and warm water to clean it out. Remember our birds have a much keener sense of smell than we do and lots of things are harmful to them. Good luck!

Thank you for all the answers! I bought some grapefruit seed extract to mix up a cleanser. I read in parrots for dummies that it kills more bacteria than even surgical soap! Once I got over the steep price tag, I have now embraced it! I clean everything with it! This is what I use for cleaning everything bird related. It is even good to put a drop into the water dish to retard bacteria. I change the water so often that I am not sure if I am going to do this. I did wipe out the microwave and just left the door open for a day. It is better! I am taking Kiwi to the vet on the 19th and will ask about getting the carpets clean.

Can you take your birds somewhere for the day? Get the carpets cleaned early in the day and leave the windows open all day. Then bring the birds back later on.

I'm not sure about carpet cleaning, but when I worked at petsmart we would have a crew come in regularly and wax the floors and it wasn't uncommon for us to loose a budgie or two the next day I can only assume that it was from the huge floor waxer that they would drive around.

Well, I spoke with the vet. He said that it isn't the steam cleaning that is dangerous but the anti stain coating that they put on after. I never get that anyway. It has a type of teflon property to it and it is very harmful to the birds. I asked about several other things. Oven cleaning, it is very bad. Do not turn your oven to clean and leave the bird in the house. He said either leave the bird outside all day and run fans with windows open or board the bird for a couple of days. Candles are not as dangerous as other things. Stay away from heavily scented, burn in areas not close to bird. I still would stick with beeswax or soy but he seemed to believe that they are made out to be more dangerous than they actually are. The big things he said are cookware, carpet protectant, oven cleaning, cleaning solutions that are toxic.

When we cleaned our carpet, we used rug doctor pet stain remover shampoo. It worked fine for us. But we're not going to clean it anymore as we're ripping out the last carpet in the house. There's no carpet anywhere else in the house but in the living room. I absolutely hate carpet!!! It's absolutely disgusting....You'll know what I mean IF you do the work yourself and removing the carpet to find tons of dust and stuffs underneath....Even worse when you've got animals....We LOVE our pergo floors as they're easy to clean and maintain. You breathe better too! The bad thing is you see EVERYTHING that's on the floor, bird dander and all, so swiffer and vacuum often....

I ripped all mine out years ago as well because between my allergies and animals it was disgusting. But, it's true you see every little piece of dust and if you know anyone with OCD it freaks them out. But, it's so much easier to keep clean. No animal hair or feathers or dander getting stuck to it. And of course no stains.

Baking soda should be the best bet in your case. Spray it over the affected area and let it stay there as long as possible. Then sweep the large amount of baking soda and vacuum the rest. If you do not get the desired results do it again till all the odour has gone.

I used Stanley Steemer Carpet Cleaner. They were a little expensive, but they did a great job and I think it was worth it!

I have a wet vacuum. The shampoo you put in it isn't exactly great for birds. For regular cleaning I put vinegar in the shampoo chamber. For heavy duty cleaning, I use Dreft laundry detergent.
