Hello all. I'm making canteloupe shake, and set aside a few slices for my Sun Conure, Boomer, but it leaves me with a whole cup of seeds. Boomer likes the fleshy part but I never tried offering him the seeds. Are they safe for conures? I searched online and could not come up with anything substantial. One site states canteloupe seeds are ok for wild birds, but did not say anything about parrots. If they are considered 'pits' like what apples have then I would probably not give it.

Thanks in advance!

All melon seeds are safe for parrots ... they love them : )

Thanks, Parrotmama, I was unsure.

When you say all melons, does this include watermelons? I only ask because fresh watermelon seeds remind me of apple pits, which are on the 'Do Not Feed' list for parrots.

Yes all melon seeds are safe. My Rosie especially enjoys papaya seeds. Oh my does she love melons. Most of all she gets the juice from them. Never made a shake with them. Interesting.....................

Its very easy, and delicious. Just use 1 whole canteloupe, add milk or vanilla ice cream, 1/4 cup white sugar, ice cube and blend! If you want to make it a little fancier, service with slices of cucumber and shredded canteloupe on top. Its great for the hot summer.

I'll have to try those Papaya seeds. The seeds have good stuff inside or is it solid through and through?

All melon, pumpkin and squash seeds are fine for birds. The reason apple seeds are not good is because they contain a small amount of cyanide. It would take many many apple seeds to cause any problems, but why take the chance. In the past I have eaten apple seeds, so have my dogs and guinea pigs without harm. But I don't let them eat them anymore.

This would be a recipe for humans and not birds???

Anna, thanks for that. I forgot about the cyanide part. I read it before but slipped my mind. For some reason, I was thinking apple seeds were bad because it was hard and solid.

Lene, yes its shake for humans only lol. I would not dare give my Sun artificial powdered sugar, ice cream or milk. This shake is a good summer drink for people though. :32:
