Cant take the begging

Following on from my other thread where I didn't know what he wanted. He begs ALL DAY. It is becoming annoying, I don't know what to do with him. lol..

He refuses a morning feed completely.. Been 3 days now, but I still try. I put pellets and seed mix in his cage, which I have seen him eat. As soon as he sees me, he begs.

I tried a late lunch today, I made it the same as I made it last night (which he guzzled down), same temp (42), same consistency, he had 2 spoonfuls and that was it. Flew away. I have made the mixture a bit thicker and put in a bowl to see if he will eat some, but he prefers to screech in my ear.

Obviously I am concerned about dehydration, there is water in his cage, I haven't seen him drink, but I do put him in there every now and then and leave him for a bit to try and get him to eat seeds and drink. If he sees me, he begs to tries to get out.

He eats at night like a champ, but he must be starving. I have tried a lower temp food but he isn't interested then either.

Any tips? Please?

Did you take him to the vet? I'm no expert but to me at least he looks very "scruffy" for even a baby bird

I'm not a breeder myself but I would take him back to where you got him from to finish weaning. In short that's the breeder's job

As a side question where abouts in the world are you? I'm gonna guess USA but in some countries and I believe some states selling unweaned birds is illegal

Also, you say now you can't take the begging. What are you going to do when he finds his big boy voice and begins making much louder noises?

Lol.. thanks for answering. Taking him back is not really an option, I don't think he was treated all that well, or properly. The syringe he showed me was dirty from their 8am feed, and I fetched him at 11am. The were in a glass fishtank in the sun by the window, even I know how much the sun heats up through glass. If having 2 birds was a breeze and they were 100% not going to fight, I would have taken both the birds. I think he is better off here.

I'm in South Africa. It seems common practice here to let them go early. Not something I would do, but then I don't do half jobs.

According to the breeder he is 8 weeks, but I still feel if he drops a feed it would be the lunch feed and the not the breakfast feed first, as he has had the whole night without food.

I don't mind the noise, honestly, if he was making different noises and screeches and talking and whistling.. great. But the begging motion, with the begging screech, constantly is driving me mad. Typically like you would get with a crying baby and you have tried everything to console it, but nothing is working. And you feel at a loss. So its not the noise as such, but the fact that everything I have tried is not working.

He is picking up weight. Monday he weighed 110gram, this morning he weighed 138gram. Enough in that time?

The scruffiness I have noticed but since getting him a week ago he has improved so much, my husband even noticed, and he doesn't notice much. He did have dried food all over him when I got him, I think with him preening it might have pulled a few head and chest feathers out. ?? Can't be sure, but he has improved looks wise.

I think a checkup at the vet won't hurt. Rather be safe than sorry.

OMG that is a beautiful bird!!!!!!! Birds don't need a lot of water, they just need clean water when they need to drink they naturally conserve water very well and if you give your bird ...lets say orange juice, it's good for them but the same amount of juice they drink will ....well it will end up on you shirt. They conserve water inside like any good dinosaur.

If you have a scale I'd try to weigh him daily but if he eats a lot at night, that might just be his way. Of course get a first time checkup with an avian vet...get a weighing etc. but from the pics he seems happy, he's not attacking the kids....

Just do the normal see a vet routine and don't worry to much unless the vet tells you to worry. He seems very well adjusted from the pics.

Aha I don't blame you then! There are some unscrupulous people out there, be it a lack of education or a lack of caring

Yeah I've seen a couple people on here from south africa and it does seem to be the norm, seems to be a bit more "wild west" so to speak out there.

Knowing very little 8 weeks looks a bit far fetched to me. 5 to 6 weeks maybe but a quick look on youtube at videos of ringnecks they normally have all their feathers in by 8 weeks old

as for the noise I do get what you mean, more than anything it's the worry weighing on you.

I wouldn't know with the weight, like I say I'm not a breeder. As long as the weight is going up then that's good as far as I'm aware

wow, that breeder sounds horrible, not even being bothered to clean food off of the little baby.

Definitely getting him to a Certified avian vet is good, they can give baby a once over and maybe offer some extra insight, there may be a tiny thing you're not seeing so we don't know of that a vet may see.

Is an adorable little bird, funny thing is looking at those pictures I get a girl vibe coming from them (based off absolutely nothing) just that feeling I get haha

All I can really suggest is to continue offering the hand-feeds until they're all refused completely for a week and keep an eye on the weight.

Have you tried eating a few of the hard foods yourself? May teach them that the stuff in the bowl is actually food

He tries to attack my son. But he deserves it. Lol

Wild West. Hahahaha. I love that.

That's what I thought as well. Regarding the feather coverage. I think the vet would give me a better idea of age.

We'll know in two years if it's a girl or boy. Unless I get it tested. Lol.

The food tastes horrible. Btw. Iv even opened some seeds in front of him. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23].

He has calmed down for now. Maybe he just sees me as his food source. Lol.

What a lovely Violet turquoise baby :). Yes the feathers look horrible but that's not surprising given the breeder you describe. I would however HURRY to get gram stains/fecal smears and check for an infection. If he was living in a state of filth he probably has at least a mild one which could kill him before you notice any real symptoms.

Cutting the afternoon feeding before the morning feed would make more sense to me as well but baby birds seem to have other ideas and usually reject the morning feed first.

That bird is 5-6 weeks not 8 in my estimation but the ragged feathers could be confusing matters. He would be flying by 8 weeks though.

And I see he still has his feathers!! Good for you!! While I'm not against all clipping, IRNs seem to react poorly to it and clipping babies is cruel and damaging to their little minds.

How warm is his brooder? That could be causing digestion issues leading to the begging. Or he could be begging for attention but I would hate to assume that and end up with a dead baby.

I have phoned the vet to see what time I can take him. I'm lucky to have a avian vet in my area.

He is definitely getting the flying right. Since yesterday he has taken off about 5 times. I am worried about him hurting himself, can't really move furniture away.

Yeah I'm not planning on clipping. Iv even ordered a harness. Lol. But that will take a while to get to South Africa.

I dont have a brooder. I saw he wasn't in one when I fetched him so I thought it was time to be out of it. I'll definitely ask my vet about all of that and organize if I need one. He is in a warm area In the house. Out of the breeze. But I will make sure he has everything he needs.

Thank you for all the comments guys I appreciate it from the experts!!!

He is borderline. At his age I would have him in it at night with the temp around 31 degrees Celsius to insure proper digestion. Your breeder really did not do a good job setting you up for success; I'm glad you are doing what it takes to protect your little one!

And we love harnesses in this family! Harnesses mean adventures!

haha Silversage I would definitely describe as the expert, think ALL of my ringneck and breeding knowledge came from her!

Wow, sage where's that first picture taken? Looks really nice, Love your GCC poking out to observe the surroundings. What do you think of those flightsuits you have on your Tiel? Stuck debating between those and harnesses for any and all future feathered friends

I can't find any harnesses in south africa. I can order from the states but that takes FOREVER

Try amazon, search for the aviator harness. Know we have them here in the UK, might be quicker and who knows maybe a little cheaper to ship to you

Update from the vet. He says Pixel is in good condition and as long as he is getting one good feed in and and he stays round in tummy area, and picking up weight, it's ok. He gave him a vitamin Injection to help boost his appetite. And suggested maybe making the formula thicker and putting it in his bowl in a cage.

He also thinks the begging is looking for attention. Lol.

But all good. I feel a bit more relaxed.
