Percy, a 5yo BFA & Jack, a 8yo Budgie
I bought Percy a new travel cage today to replace the horrid, old fashioned box thing that the pet shop foisted off on me before I knew any better.

This one is a proper cage that he can see out of, move around in and has space for food and water. It is actually a cockatiel cage that I am re-purposing. It is sturdy and the bars won't allow break outs. It is small enough to carry around easily but still large enough that he can spread his wings if he sits on the right perch. All in all, I am very happy with it....BUT-

I can't believe it is supposed to be so bare! It came with two small dowel perches which I've covered with different materials (so that they're not the same size and texture underfoot) and placed in the corners. I also made my own guava branch perch that I put in the bottom part of the cage so he can get to the food bowls. But that's IT - nothing else in there. I'm itching to add a swing or ladder or something :D. You know me!

I intend to use it for vet visits and sunshine time (and outdoor mistings!) outside and maybe for the odd drive around if Percy is keen on driving.

What do you think - should there be toys and stuff in there? What do your travel cages look like? I know Mr Kiwi has a glorious pimped out limo but I am more interested in what mere mortal birds would need ;). (Just kidding, April! You know I adore Kiwi and his super duper traveller :) )

Hi Michelle. This is Bundii's travel cage. It is 18 x 18 x 27 inches. I have it all pulled apart at the moment as it is not in use. I use it for when we travel to my mum and dads, about 7 hours away. I usually have one low perch and one high perch - this allows for her long tail.

I don't usually put toys in as they tend to move around in the car and could possibly hit her in the head. Ever the over cautious parront. If we are travelling at night or in cloudy weather, I will put her bed in their so she can sleep. She sleeps in there fine whilst the car is going. It is big enough for a couple of nights but I would not be comfortable for any longer. That is why, when I upgraded her cage 2 years ago, I kept the old one and took it to my mums and stored under our bed and then when we get there, I build it and she has a cage of the appropriate size. We often stay for more than a week

Anyways back to the travel cage. As I said, I usually just have the 2 perches and the food and water bowls. On the longer trips, I usually have plenty of foot toys that I can give to her and that keeps her busy enough. She also likes looking out the window at the other birds etc.

Last trip, we had to stop for roadworks and there were cows beside the road. You should have seen the look on her little face. It was like what the heck??? Mum, what the heck are they????? :D

I would love to get a pak-o-bird but I am yet to save up the money. It definitely on the list.

Hope this helps.

Actually, this is Kiwi's travel cage-

The carrier is nice for walks and short car trips, but if we we ever to take him overnight somewhere, he goes in the cage. Don't get me wrong, that carrier is definitely getting it's fair share of use, but theres just no replacing a good, old fashioned cage for longer journeys;) He likes to hold onto the bars as we drive.

So are you going to share any photos of Percy in his new travel/outdoor cage? We are all waiting:D

Thanks ladies :). Clearly, I'm being over-zealous again, eh? Nothing new there! :D.

I never considered the toys hitting my poor boy in the head  Thanks for that insight, Bundi! I'd have felt so guilty if that had happened!

I'm thinking I'm going to jaz it up "just a tad" for home use (outside time, can't wait!!!) And then remove extra stuff if we need to travel or go to the vet.

Pics to come soon! He is very excited about the cage and tried his best to get in and help while I was setting it up yesterday. I'm so proud of him that he is so easy with new things these days. Rather than being afraid of anything new, he now pounces on new things almost instantly...sometimes even new things that aren't HIS! ;)

Arrrh Michelle, you are forgetting that what is yours is the birds and what is the birds is the birds. :D. Now don't forget it. Bundii constantly reminds me of this. :)
