Can anyone tell me what kind of parrot this is?

Hi,
My friends had this bird for about 40 years, but they got old and moved to another country. The bird is not getting much personal attention from their son, and he wants me to take it. I'm considering taking it because i am a bird person and i had cockatiels for years. However, I've never had a bird like this and I'd like to research it, see what it likes to eat, etc. He has never taken it out of the cage but i take it out and play with it. It has a very sweet nature. He tells me the only thing it will eat is walnuts. I have a hard time believing that because my other birds liked a few different things. Anyhow, if someone can tell me what breed it is and anything further about it, i would much appreciate it. Thank you!

Looks like a red-lored Amazon. Most people with Amazon's start with a base diet of pellets, then add fresh veggies and fruits on top. Do be careful with fatty things like seeds and nuts because they are prone to fatty liver disease.

Yup red lored. I found them to be sweeter and relatively quiet amazons. But of course they are all individuals. Yours seems to have an overgrown beak, and nails to match.

Yes I agree, going to need a beak trim by an avian vet. Also the beak indicates some nutritional shortcoming.
My rescue that was fed only sunflower seeds took some veggies right away , like she had craved them..

For mental health therapy, and to get vitamin D, I would suggest spending some time outdoor with the bird in a secure travel cage, or their main cage rolled out and zip tie doors. Don't leave him alone. It would do his soul good to feel the breeze, to look far, to feel the sunshine.
I found my rescue in a dark corner, and the first time I took her out side she sighed from her soul. Anyway sunshine will help with feather health, birds immunity, and mental health. You don't have to put the cage in full on sun, in the shade, or part shade is perfect. I was told my doctor to sum for 15-30 minutes daily, I manage twice a week right now, but I see a difference.

Thank you so much for helping this Parrot. It breaks my heart knowing how many more are out there in similar situations. But this one can have a better life!!! You are wonderful!!!! No wonder the parrot has chosen you!!!

RLAs are known for being very sweet birds, especially mature ones.

This sweet old guy looks like he’s been plucking a bit which may be health related but is more likely related to being abandoned by his owners of 40 years and then not given love and attention As another poster mentioned, his beak indicates he’s had a long term poor diet. An avian vet can run tests to find out exactly what’s going on and get him on a healthier diet. Poor guy also looks to desperately need a good bath. Most amazons love to be bathed with a mister bottle. If you’re already a bird lover and have the time and resources, I wouldn’t hesitate to take this guy. Amazons make good companions and smaller species amazons tend to be especially sweet.
