Caique Behavior Question

We recently took in a 3 year old male BHC approximately a month ago. He wasn't handled much in the recent past in his home. From the minute we brought him home, he has been friendly with everybody - young, old, male and female. He loves coming out of his cage climbing on folks. He is beaky but hasn't broken skin. He loves taking treats, surfing on us. He will try almost any food and has been super adaptable - was even good for the vet for his checkup.

I I have heard from many caique homes, that caiques can change over the years and become aggressive, challenging to manage and will attack. This sounds a bit farfetched.... I imagine any live being can and will change over time, but have people experienced drastic changes in their bird's temperament/behavior? The vet seems to think he is a mature bird or close to it. He said he is a super well balanced caique. I would love to hear from the folks who have experience.

well it sounds like you have a good friend there. Yes any creature with a consciousness can change opinions on things, that's the beauty of it. The drastic change is likely a reference to puberty, what will happen is a sweet innocent birdy who loves cuddles kisses and everyone becomes a disgustingly moody teenager with no outlet for their frustration so yeah they can become grumpy. It often draws out underlying problems/lapses in training but it sounds like yours was well trained and well-behaved. Saying that he will get a hormonal period every year, just essentially a bit of a strop/tantrum for a couple weeks combined with wanting to do the do so to speak.

Hope to see some pictures soon ;)

Welcome and be welcomed. I;ve only had 2 experiences with Caiques. One that I met in CHina was such a sweetie, going to anyone, and immediately asking for head scratches, a real mushball. The other was in a all parrot pet shop, where a cage full of white belly caiques swarmed out of an open cage door like a swarm of bees and were holy hell to get all of them back into the cage. But it sounds like yours is a well adjusted and socialized parrot. Work hard to maintain his socialization. Good Luck!

YES! This sounds like absolute heaven! (or hell I forget which is which) Nothing sounds funnier than a swarm of Caiques playing around. Definitely among the reasons I could never work in a parrot-based pet shop :D

If the bird is 3yo and still all lovable, you're probably fine. Just don't go thinking hmm I'll get more caiques or more birds... focus on the one you have for now.

I have seen videos of people having issues, it's usually after they introduce a new caique into the home or another bird.

ALSO PICS! where are they!!!!! :):)
