I was looking and Dr. Fosters/Smith cage liners they seem to be more of a tissue or cotton type as opposed to the wax paper liners. Has anyone used these or what would you recommend. I use newspaper currently and although safe, I dont like the smell they have
Thanks

We use newspaper....but, I recently saw this site Cage Catchers and think they might be a nice convenient choice.

We use "Puppy Pee Pads" or "Adult Incontinence Pads" and LOVE them.

These can be bought for far less at places like Wal-Mart, Target, TJ Max, even eBay has them for sale. They come in different sizes. We use 24"x36" on our larger Macaw cages and the smaller 21"x23" in the smaller cages.

What we like about them is the plastic backing on them and the absorbing material on top. The plastic backing doesn't allow any spilt water to pass through, thus, it saves your metal trays from prematurely rusting away.

Some will argue that the cost isn't worth it, but we have 14 cages and even then we feel the offset of cost is far worth it because it makes caring for that many birds a LOT easier. Tray change outs and cleaning are a lot easier with the use of them.

Please note, in ALL of our cages we use the bottom grate/grille to separate the waste tray and pads from the birds.

How is the effect different from newspaper? I'm seeing that a multi-day stack of newspaper can soak through the top sheet, so that is one thing.

The web page doesn't say much. Is it just wax paper, like we use in the kitchen?

Yeah, I don't know since I am currently using newspaper. Sounds like it though....

I just use newspaper. and I haven't noticed a smell.

Are the puppy pads safe in case the bird digests it. I dont use a grate. Papertowels I guess could be okay but Im reading that white papertowels may have been bleached and when it comes safety that takes precident
thanks

I use the fosters liners. They are heavier than tissue paper, but the same sort of material. I change them very day to 2 days max and they come right up without any problem.

I looked at the liners posted earlier in the thread. The don't describe them in enough detail to tell how they are different than wax paper from a grocery store. I'm sure they must be thicker, otherwise they would get soggy. But it would cost about $180 a year for just Pritti's main cage (changing twice per day), and more for his play gyms. The newspaper under the grating is no problem, but it sure would look nice and bright with a white liner every day. Alas, I'd rather use the money for toys, perches and nutrition.

Yes, paper that is white has been bleached somehow. Natural pulp is sort of almond colored. You're more worried about how it was whitened then the fact that paper is not eatable?

Paper towels will also contain resin or glue of some kind to improve strength.
