More questions about the new cage :-( ...

We bought Stewie a new cage off of craigslist. It was very clean and spotless. They had only had it for 3 years. They said that they sprayed it with bleach (YIKES) and placed it on the porch (this was a few months ago)...it had a thin layer of dust on it.

I spent the day scubbing it down over and over with hot water and vinager...only to find that this mystery dust keeps coming back. Looking at the seed guards there is a shiny coat (they never used the seed guards). The cage is chalky and has a matte finish compared to the seed guards. It seems that this shiny coat has been removed from the cage and the paint is dusting off.

What would cause this and is there anything we can do about it? Anyway to repaint or reseal it?

I am worried that they sprayed it with bleach and never rinsed it, which may be the cause of the paint chalking off?

Well, bleach is the recommended way to disinfect a cage, but in a small ratio compared to the water (50 parts water to 1 part bleach). I suppose it is possible the bleach ate some of the protective coating, but I don't know that for sure.

Cages can be repainted or repowder coated. Whoever does the work though needs to be sure they are using a paint that is safe for birds.

Yep the extremely corrosive nature of bleach will eat at the powdercoat. The "dust" is oxidation and no scrubbing will stop it.

If you decide to repaint the prep must be perfect or the paint/powder coating won't adhere.

Thank you :) I love this cage. It is my dream cage for him. Do either of you know where I can learn how to properly do this or buy the paint that is safe for birds? OR even a company that would do this?

If I had the proper instructions and supplies I am confident that I can do it myself...I just don't want to make any mistakes.

Roxy has the good info. There is a shop in your area that does powdercoating try calling a few.

If you paint here are some responses from mfgrs.

Thank you for contacting Valspar Technical Support. In regards to your
inquiry of our Color Place Paint. Yes, you may use it on a metal bird
cage. Our Paints are non toxic once it has fully cured. I recommend you
allow the Paint to cure for a week prior to placing your bird in the
cage. Should you need additional information please advise.

Thank you so much for all of your help. I will call around :) It may just need a clear coat put on it again. OR it may just need an entire new paint job. I am so mad that these people ruined a perfectly good cage. It is only 3 years old, no rust, and looks brand new other than the sealant.
