Cage Covers?

Concerning cage covers what are peoples thoughts? should you get one? how often should it be on/for how long? anything that you can think of sharing would be great?

I cover my birds cages at night as best I can. The cages both pretty big, so I just clip blankets onto the sides that face out.

Sully will complain at night until I cover him. But the boys do not like the dark at all, they will scream their heads off it it is dark. It all depends on the bird, some like it to be dark and some prefer a night light.

I cover Bode because he whined until I did it the first night he was here. I don't cover Kitty, but she has a happy hut that she snuggles in and it's pretty dark in there. She isn't usually too effected by the daylight like some birds. She gets her 12 hours regardless. If she stopped getting her 12 hours, I wouldn't hesitate to cover her!

I cover Rosie because her cage is in my room, so this way if I have to turn on my light or if I stay up later then her I won't be as likely to wake her up.

I cover Zeus with my house coat at night when it is bed time, it gets quite cold in my room so I prefer the thickness of the the house coat, he has began to associate the cover as sleep time for the both of us. He quiets down and begins to sleep, I keep the front end of the cage un-covered so he can see some light so he doesn't freak out for what ever reason. The light/lamp is set to the dimmest setting and resembles a soft moonlight setting, so its not too bright for us.

You may need to experiment a little to find out exactly how much cage covering your parrot prefers. My Quaker parrot Ralph likes to have the top, back and two sides of his cage completely covered-- but only the upper third of the cage front. He gets upset if too much of the cage front is covered, or two little of the rest. George, my YCA, liked to have his cage almost completely covered, with just a narrow opening at the front corner opposite where he perched at night.

I usually use plain cotton tablecloths for cage covers; they work well and are easy to keep clean.

Cameo`s bed time is 8:30PM and has to be covered or she will squawk until I do. She will also squawk if I leave the lights on in the kitchen where her cage is.
