Hi, I would like to know anyone's thoughts and suggestions about putting covers over their GCC's at night at bedtime. I always do it every night so my birds expect it and are used to it. I have a "Summer" blanket that's lighter in material and a "Winter" blanket that's heavier to keep them warm at night. I don't use blankets in the day time if they have to be in the cage. Oh, an by the way, they have a funny ritual of chirping as I put the blanket around the cage. It's really cute!:rainbow1::rainbow1:

I generally cover my flock at night. Baby, Tango and Stanley seem to sleep fine with or without covers. Bindi and Mr Tee seem to need covers or they forget to sleep :). Screamer (my cockatiel) needs to be covered or she has night frights.

I used to, and will share a cautionary tale. Covered one of my Goffin's cages with a loose fitting cover. He used feet to draw material inside cage and chewed a small hole. Proceeded to stick his head inside the hole, twisted, and began to choke. Luckily I was nearby, heard a commotion, grabbed scissors, and cut him loose. Perhaps freak accident, but if it happened once.....

Connie likes to be covered at night, she gets a good 8 hours, and dozes in the late afternoon uncovered.
We have a little ritual at night, I hold up the cover, she goes to the top perch, comes up to the bars and does kisses.
She likes routine!

I also have a winter weight cage covering and a lighter summer weight. Rin now will fly into his cage at night as I am covering it. Very cute and it tells me that he is ready to snuggle down for the night!!

It "IS" important to be aware of materials used in EVERYTHING. Birds are forever "tasting" things in their vicinity. Sometimes it's just curiosity, others it's to see your reaction; if you react they will continue. lol Be safe AND vigilant. jh

HaHa! I learned the hard way. When Syd first adopted me he had one cage and even though I covered him he would be just like a naughty child climbing upside down to the bottom of the cage to peer and chatter at me underneath the cover. I got a bigger one.

This was better but it got that I couldn't make much noise without him joining in. Again not much sleep was had. In the end I got a smaller cage for bedtime and put it in the spare bedroom. He now goes very happily, gets covered and I hear nothing unless I listen outside the door - which I do sometimes just to hear his comical way of practising words before sleep. At this time of year he has a black cloth plus a wool blanket that he can't get at. In the summer he has just the black cloth. He loves bedtime. He fluffs up when I start to sing his bedtime song, tells me he's a good boy, and sounds kisses as I cover him. He has me well trained.

My two get covered at bedtime, but not fully. Tucker gets the top and about 2 feet down from there covered. That gives him a "safe place" to be up high, and he immediately goes to his ring swing to sleep on. Doesn't do anything for heat, but does help cut down on draft from above.(slow ceiling fans at night to circulate heat in the winter)

Baxter is another story. I cover the top and front and back about 1 foot down, sides not covered. Again, slows the draft from above. I've learned from experience, if I cover all the way around, she'll hang upside down from the side and launch poop out through the bars onto the cover and floor. It's nasty. Bear in mind, Baxter is a holder. She only poops 2-3 times a day. We don't know why, but she's always been that way. Anyway, when she lets it go, it's REALLY BAD!

So... I don't cover the sides any more. Hahaha.
