Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and a new GCC owner. I need advice on cleaning the bottom bars of his cage since he hasn't shown interest in coming out of the cage just yet. Should I force him to come out so I can clean it or is there something I can use while he is in the cage? He is just getting used to being touched and I don't want to set him back by stressing him, but the bottom is very dirty. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Chris

Leave the door open an hour or half an hour and see if he will come out by himsef. You can also try coaxing him out with treats. Conures are tvery curious creatures and should eventually come out.

When I clean my cages my birds don't need to be out necessarily. When it's time to clean, sometimes a bird is at "home" and sometimes they're on the play equipment outside the cages or visiting a neighbor's cage. I'll clean in there regardless if they're home or not. Just use spray cleaner specially made for birds, and some paper towels and go about your business. Simple. :)

Unless they're cage territorial and try to attack your hands and arms while cleaning, there's no reason to have to get him out.

Thank you for the replies. I did by a bird friendly cleaner to use, so I will try that. He is not aggressive at all, he just gets all flustered in the cage whenever I try to do anything in there. We are slowly building up his trust so I am a little shy about causing his any distress, but I really need to clean that cage bottom. We are going to try to coax him out tomorrow and if that doesn't work I will go slowly and try to clean it up with him in it. Maybe if I get lucky he will hide by his 'snuggy' and not be too frightened.

What kind of cleaner do yall have? I have been using a wet paper towel and scrubbing very hard and it still doesnt all come off!! So please tell me the brand of cleaner.

I use Avinol. It's professional veterinary strength. Will abolish any bacteria and even viruses! I spray the heck out of things I buy at the bird store. It even works fast to dissolve hard poop and food debris. I get it at my vet's office. I don't know how else to get it.

There is also a product called Poop Off made for bird cages but honestly it smells so strongly of a sweet perfume type smell that it can knock out a horse.

If the bird does not go to the bottom, try putting newspaper on top of the grate as well as under. This method saves so much cleaning time. I do it in all my bird cages.
