Buying a cage online?

Hello all!

I have recently gotten an african grey, he needed a new home. In any case, the cage he came in is not the right cage for a grey, he is in a conure cage. The bars will not support the perches Simba needs for example. I am looking into purchasing a new cage for him online. I have never bought a cage in this way before. I am finding plenty in my price range, however when I read the reviews either folks love the cage or hate the cage, so to me these reviews are not helping me to make my decision. I am looking for some advice from those of you who may have made a cage purchase online. Who are the best vendors? What are the better brands of cages? Is there anything in particular I should look for in a good parrot cage? Simba does seem to be quite the escape artist lol!! The price to be paid for having an intelligent bird.

Thanks for the input

I bought Rosie's cage online, and I know many other members have as well. I have a inexpenaive off brand cage that lots of people own. When compared to my African Greys "avian adventures" cage I can say the off rand is not nearly as well built, the bars aren't as thick, and the powder coat will brooably wear down much faster with a bird who chews the bars a lot. Macaw owners who buy this off brand cage often need to replace it in a year or two.

It's worked amazing for Rosie though, she is not a big chewer and the cage still looks brand new. I LOVE her cage, it's perfect for her and was pretty dirt cheap since I bought it during a eBay close out sale for only $214($240 with CA sales tax & free shipping).

eBay is worth looking through, Craigslist can also have fantastic deals but those cages will need to be thoroughly cleaned/disenfected for the risk of disease.

Copper, that's a GREAT purchase price!!!!

OP, I dunno if your local area is holding a bird fair or not but it's usually this time of the year my area holds theirs. It's a great place to find cages at good deals too.

Buying online is tough because you never know if it will be free of defects. If so, good luck getting it returned or fixed.

I do not recommend an HQ cage because there is no customer service. I had problems with mine and could not get any assistance when I needed it.

I agree with MikeyTN. If you can attend a bird fair, then you can look over a variety of brands. Keep in mind, most of the big name brands are made in China. I recommend your looking at the quality of locks and how the welds and paint were done. HQ has thin paint, IMO, and sharp edges on their welds. Oh and bad wheels as well.
