Any ideas.

Sparky had some garlic sticks this evening and has garlic breath and keeps burping now, she's falling asleep on my arm, her eyes are closing now.

Just making sure it's okay that they do burp like us? no more garlic sticks for a while if they make her do that...

What do you feed yours specifically? She's on TidyMix but trying to get her to eat anything but, sweetcorn and peas is tough. She won't even touch fruit.

Took Bobby a while though, maybe 3-4 weeks... I won't give up. Her coat needs some extra goodness in there I think. :) specially as she's moulting too.

Considering she's a 'mans' bird she's asleep on me!

Onion and garlic topic came up last night. Its up to the invidual to decide but it is said that neither is good for birds.

Is she imitating a burping noise???

None of my parrots have EVER burped, I swear, I didn't think they could burp. Now I'm confused.

I have never heard any of my birds ever burping

As stated by an avian veterinarian in magazine a few months back " birds do not have the ability to burp, pass gas, cough or hiccup" if the bird is burping it has most likely picked up on the sound and is imitating the sound but they can not due to physical makeup of their bodies burp.

Maybe it is something she picked up then.

Are there some links about Garlic.... I've seen one or two that says do, and some that say don't.

All information is greatly recieved.

Their are some garlic sticks are already in the food I buy, which was highly recommended to me for her.

Chloe often lets out belches, she sure as heck didn't learn that from me! Of course it's a noise and not the real thing. It is annoying talking to a parrot that responds to you in belches and farts ....sigh.

Interesting about the garlic....I didn't know that, now I want to look it up!

My B&G has made a burping sound. When she gets excited and is playing, I've noticed that when she stretches out her neck to reach for something I hear an air sucking sound on occasion. Not like a bird hissing sound, it's as if she's sucking in air. Her neck puffs up, but not in her crop area, and she lets it back out after a little while. I think sometimes she sucks air into her crop and/or stomach as well, either that or the veggies that she eats makes her burp. Anyway, I've definitely heard her burp. Not real often, but it has happened, and it wasn't her mimicking the sound.

Nika used to burp after eating a lot of corn on the cob. She would do her pecky thing on something (like my hand) and there would be a slight hiss of air and the smell of fermented corn would come out. She also sometimes does it after a lot of sprouts, but it doesn't smell fermented, just smells like sprouts.

My sun conure burps several times in the morning. He gets a nugget of granola cereal wetted with lactose-free milk - about the size of half a peanut. Then about 30 minutes later, when I let him out of the cage, he flies to a perch, stretches his neck, opens his beak, and squeezes his body; air hisses out. He does this 3-5 times. I speculate that this is releasing gas formed by bacterial action in his crop. He does not vocalize during this action. So, by my observation, this parrot burps.

I know this is an old thread, but I saw your current comment...Over the years I've heard several people say that "Birds don't burp and they don't pass gas either", but that's totally untrue, at least in my own personal and professional experience over my 32 or so years of owning and living with them...The difference is exactly what you just wrote, that birds don't "burp" from their stomachs like we do, they burp from their Crops...However, the reasons why they burp from their Crops are pretty much the same reasons that we burp from our stomachs...If you give you bird any type of drink that is carbonated they'll burp (I don't suggest doing this)...If your bird eats anything that causes a gassy build-up in their Crops, they'll burp. I've heard numerous birds burp over the years, but where you have to worry about it is if it is not a one-time-thing, and your bird is burping continually throughout the day and it continues to the next day...

Their Crops are very prone to both bacterial and especially fungal infections (yeast), and food/liquid actually can start to ferment inside of their Crops if Yeast is present...So if your bird starts burping and it's not a one-time-thing but rather continues throughout the day and into the next day, this is a gift to you, because it's a very early sign/symptom of a GI fugal/yeast infection that you otherwise probably wouldn't be aware of at all for weeks or longer because of how long they typically hide all outward symptoms of illness. They can't hide Yeast fermenting food inside of their Crops! So, just a little FYI that if your bird sudeenly starts burping and it continues to happen multiple times that same day and then into the next day, you need to get them to your CAV for a Crop culture and microscopy because chances are that they have a GI fungal/yeast infection and they need a prescription anti-fungal medication to clear it up, as well as a daily Avian Probiotic supplement sprinkled on their food daily to replenish the healthy, normal, "good" bacteria that needs to live throughout their GI Tract and keep the fungi/yeast at-bay...Qwiko Avian Probiotic powder supplement is a great avian Probiotic supplement, I give it to all of my birds every single day, it's just a little pre-measured scoop (comes in the bottle) that you sprinkle on their daily pellets or seed-mix (it's a very small amount of powder and it mixes well with seed-mix or pellets, and they don't even notice it)...A bottle of the Qwiko Avian Probiotic costs $9.99 at any Petco, and a bottle typically lasts about 3 months if you give it to them every single day...

Our Buzzy CAG burps and belches and makes other body cavity sounds, possibly imitating his previous owner's teenager.

It's a contact call to me along with his owl impressions.

When he sees me and I handle him, he will make those sounds.

I realize this is an old thread, but I'm still freaked about the Garlic.

BTW, Levi burps and they sound just like my husband's. But, it's always followed with an, "excuuuuse me" haha :D He's so polite. (He's just imitating as well.)

EllenD, I'm always big on prevention. So, how do they acquire a yeast infection? Too much yeast in their diet? Do you know?

Thx.

Enzo burps lots, but she is mimicking me after a beer. I dont think she has ever burped out of context though, I have to have a bottle of beer in my hand.
