Dear All:

I have a Quaker parakeet named Jet, and I am moving into an apartment next month. My main concern is that b/c it's Southern Louisiana, all the landlords at 1st Lake apartments say that they must spray 4 times a year. Is there anyway I can protect my baby? What if they don't tell me before they spray? I'm so nervous and I don't know what I should do.

NO, you can't not protect them if they are in the apartment and the pest control people are required to spray inside as well as outside. Most pest control people warn you that you can't have birds or fish in the house once they treat it for several hours. If I were you, I would try the following:

Speak to the landlord about the problem. If they are alright with you having birds, they may be able to work out a sollution such as only spraying outside of the apartment and not inside or utilize the putty type insect bait in your apartment rather than the spray.

If that doesn't work, then you must find suitable boarding arrangements for a short period of time every 3 months for at least 24-48 hours. Good luck on your problem, but this is one of the reasons I wouldn't own birds while living in an apartment.

I would speak directly to their exterminator service. Get a schedule. Get instructions. Make sure you close the windows on that day. Find out drying times for what they spray. And, if possible whether they can use something bird safe.
