Hello,

We purchased a young parakeet from a big name pet store in January. He is still learning to step up and not fly (flitter) away from hands. One thing I have noticed with his eyes seems odd to me. In his right eye, you can always see a little bit of the white. In his left eye, it is all black. I have noticed this for the past few weeks. Always the right eye.

From where he sits most of the time inside his cage, the brightest window is to his right, could that be it? When he is out and about for an extended period of time, however, it is still the same. Is this normal?

Thanks.

I wouldn't necessarily say that's a problem.... he appears to be a recessive pied, which would result in the black eyes and pink cere. If he was dominant pied, then he'd have the white eyering and a blue cere.

He might be a half-sider.

I had to re-look at the pictures off my computer for a better bigger sized picture then my phone. And I have to agree with Monica here as I don't see any issue as well. Are you able to provide a more clear better quality picture???

I agree is seems not to be an issue after looking at the pic's
If you are still in doubt, take the bird to a vet to have peace of mind

Some better pictures.

We picked him because of his colors. We had never seen a budgie that had both the blue/white colors as well as a yellowish tint all over. We also thought it was cute that it looks like he is wearing a football helmet and only one of his cheeks has a purple spot.

I guess I will have to read up on parakeet coloring and recessive/dominant traits. Can anyone suggest a good link?

Thanks for the responses.

Your talking about the Iris ring! Now I see it in the picture and that's pretty much what Monica was trying to tell you about the recessive/dominant trait. I'm sure if you google search it you can find something to read on as I don't have a specific site.

I can't say I've ever seen a budgie with eyes like that (one eye dark, one eye with white ring)

He would be considered a parblue (yellowface type 2) recessive pied at this point in time, but if he gets a blue cere (instead of pink), that would make him a double factor dominant pied. It is possible for him to be both dominant pied and recessive pied, although when this occurs, you usually end up with a clear colored bird (looks lutino or albino, but with black eyes). It would be interesting to see if he changes much in coloration as he ages.

Here's one website on budgie mutations.

i think its harmless whatever it is, but i do have to say this is super fascinating. ive never seen that either. if it stays that way, maybe its just unique to him.
